: Flatfender tub dimensional drawing
oldjeep 06-17-2002, 11:23 AM Anyone out there done a dimensional drawing of a flatfender tub that they would like to share? I'm in the dreaming stages for the next version of my CJ2a and need to do some experimenting with tub size - where to stretch it and working on a way to add a little more seating room (kids keep growing;)
Sundowner 06-17-2002, 11:29 AM get a tape measure and email me some sketches.

I've got autocad and visio, just trying to avoid measuring and drawing if someone had already done it.
I suppose you want to run a top?

I'll run the same setup I have now, a trail top with no sides or doors. Just to keep the rain off our heads. My top is just a homemade vinyl setup (someone else made it), could make a longer one pretty easily.
What I am trying to figure out is where to stretch the tub, and how that effects the seating space. I doubt that I can stretch it enough to fit 2 back seats, but if I could fit a seat in front of the wheelwells, I could use a 48" wide back seat instead of the 36". My initial thought is to remove the stock wheelwells and use wheel tubs so that they take up less space.
I've got a line on a really nice stock frame that I would be extending and re-enforcing - tub mods wouldn't happen till I'm ready to swap everything to the new frame.
Mine has about the same space as a CJ-7, since I extendoed it at the doors 10", but I boubt that is enough room for all the kids. Maybe you should get a Willys wagon:D
Sundowner 06-17-2002, 12:24 PM what about a hack soloution like Jeep did with the CJ-6?

I don't want a bus;)
My initial thought is adding 20 inches to the front floor and running the door openings long like the passenger side of a M170 (CJ6 ambulance) - gets me a 100" wheelbase. All sounds good in my head, but I want to actually have a plan before I start chopping stuff up. If I could get a full width rear seat in, that would be plenty of room. All 3 of them can sit in the back seat right now, but that won't work much longer - plus a little cargo space would be nice.
i remember seeing some killer auto cad ones on here a while ago, im gonna try and find em again
ok well the pics dont work anymore but maybe u can get them to work

I would do 10" in the door like mine, and 10" at the red line.
Just get the steel and start chopping, plans are over rated:rasta: :flipoff2:

That might work for you, but mine actually runs right now
:D
The reason I was thinking of extending the door the whole 20" is to make it easier to get into the back. Right now you have to crawl through one of the triangles in the rear cage.

I looked at that thread, the cool drawing was a 3d rendering of a cj5 tub.
thanks

If you are doing a 20" extendo you are gonna need to change your cage, also. Make the new one easier for the rug rats to climb through:D
No plans works great:flipoff2:

Yes, the cage will require a bunch of changes. right now the back 2 hoops sit on the rear fenderwells, they will have to go all the way to the floor. It'll probabally be easier to just sell the cage to another CJ 2/3 guy and start over than to modify the existing cage.

I probabally already asked you this, but what did you do with your original CJ frame? And what kind of condition was it in?

Look at the back of the frame :D
The front was trashed and the back solid, so I made a new front section. It's the old school boxed rear. If I was gonna do it again I would just build the entire frame rails. A lot of the old rivets and spot welds are a pita to get off if you aren't gonna use 'em.
oldjeep 06-19-2002, 07:35 AM Nice looking work. I was going to buy a perfect 2a frame on ebay, but the seller is shilling the bid - hate dealing with crooks. The guy is a real dumbass about it, has a second user ID that has only ever bid on his auctions.:mad3:
Grandpa Jeep 06-19-2002, 12:48 PM Have you reported it to eBay? They will bust him on that.
Have you thought about an aftermarket frame? I know they will make them with custom features like saginaw steering box mounts, wrangler spring mounts etc. They could probably build you and extended one too. They're spendy, but it would be a lot easier.

Chuck is never gonna get a big enough crowbar to pry that $$$ out for a new frame:D :flipoff2:
Building a frame is pretty easy, and you don't have much choice with thet mods you are planning, IMO.

$2K + cough, hack wheez. What, and double the cost of the jeep;) I like working on it more than I like driving it, so I would never buy anything expensive that I could build.

Keith Haw 06-19-2002, 11:55 PM Chuck, have you seen this site? Az Rockcrawlers (http://www.azrocks.alloffroad.com/index.html)
There doing something like that. Building a flatty from scratch. Might try giving them a shout.
