No, it is impossible to wheel a traveler, it is too long, it is a station wagon, not a wheelin rig;)

like would that work? A traveler is an extended scout 11. If you look underneath you should be able to see the splice in the frame. If your gonna shortn it you should just get a scout 11.

I think it would be cool to "bob" a Traveler 18" - leave the wheelbase the same (more or less), don't cut the frame, just lop 18" off the back.

You could then install a standard 100" SII Traveltop, but the axles would be at the ends of the rig.

You could move the stock gas tank forward under the cargo bed, in front of the rear axle, and NOT have to give up your bed to a fuel cell.

I have met several people who like me prefer the Traveler when wheeling due to the extended wheelbase and more cargo room. The tighter trails are harder and it makes wheeling easier at time and it make easy short wheelbase trail more of a challenge.

I do like being able to sleep in the 6 foot bed, the added cargo room, the fiberglass top and rear door that gets all the way out of the way when loading. Man i gotta say its been fun. I am building a Scout 2 now, but for longer wheeling trips i will still always love the raveler for the better rid when getting there, easier towing when towing a trailer, and the ability to take several people shit with you camping in one rig.

That being said I hold the record for most people in a Traveler with the top on. I hauled 18-19 people down to the Bar at WSU one night for some Bingin. Call me the Drunk Buss, but the driver does have benifits from the hotties...heheh:D

What else ya want to know??

I am pondering the 18" chop off the back and staying with the 118 wheelbase. It would be cool. I know of a few real nice Travelers for sale in the $2500 range that everything works on and they are rust free. Cool thing is all you shortbase guys leave them alone for people like me with a sick addiction to length. I guess it goes with Um the ...How shall I say Second brain i have:smokin:

Hey, Fleckster!
I have been pondering this mod for some time (fiberglass does not rust and I live at the beach). How did you join the two halves after cutting the Traveler top, and what did you end up using for the side windows? I was going to try and retain the sliders for the side windows if possible. Have you ever cut the rear gate in half and used a tail gate, and if so how did you get the lift gate to lock/ latch? Whew! Lots a ??'s, but any inside knowledge would be appreciated. TIA:)

John,

That cut down top on the SII looks real sweet. ALso the picture crossing the Snohomish - Where was that? I don't recall anyplace you could get across. After all the Snohomish is only a few blocks away from my house.

Love that top....:D

From Monroe head towards the old NWBinders Roundup location. You'll cross a bridge at the edge of town.

Drive down under the bridge along the beach - that's where John crossed the river.

I took the picture, but wouldn't dare the waters!

So I've got a pair of pictures of an IH "factory conversion" SII with a cut down traveler type of top. Kinda a special edition like the midnite-star. It's called the sunriser. Pretty cool looking too. Shortened roof, and T-tops. Totally late 70s. But... since I'm a damned newbie without the fancy little red star next to my name, I can't upload 'em. Anyone wanna upload 'em for me?

Last one. This shows Jason Colavecchia from Canada the one who i bought the top and visor from. Three reasons, 1. It won't rust here in Washington, 2. It looks way cool and 3. Its a model to convert the three tops i am parts whoring here at the shop.

Rob Marks of NWBinders has alosmperformed this conversion for someone. He is alos the one who sells the two piece rear lift gate door kit for Travelers.

The other big reason i like this top is ease of loading. I hate putting stuff on the tailgate, then having to shove it in. With the Traveler style you simply walk up and drop it in and go.

I know of Three of these conversions in the United States so far. I dont think its too common though. I do plan on converting them and selling them to people as another innovative product from BCB.

I know of one here in Santa Cruz, but the current owner did not do the conversion. It does look like it was done well though.

Thanks for the pics.

What does the lift gate door kit include, and how much?

Hey O.S., :flipoff2: I told you this would look cool!:D

Those trucks are Factory Terra Suntanners, i don't believe any one has started remaking the tops yet, i heard AT Scouts was going to a few years ago but they never did.

i was thinking of bobbing my traveler and using a sII softtop and door glass, or making my own full length softtop, but i never thought of a toneau cover/soft top. something to think about.
