: strongest ball joints
steve604 09-24-2007, 11:48 PM i am officially sick of replacing ball joints so i want to get something strong. i've got a 2000 f250 sd and it's time to do all 4. i've used moog before and found that they didn't last long at all for how much they cost. i've been thinking about factory ford stuff because it seemed to be good for a few years. i've also heard of spicer ball joints being the best to get but they are priced really cheap so i'm wondering if you get what you pay for. is there different grades of the spicer joints?
has anyone had really good luck with a particular brand? is one brand actually stronger and more durable than another?
f250crawler 09-25-2007, 02:19 AM Just go kp instead.
Spicers are good for the money.
VerticalTRX 09-25-2007, 05:10 AM It's a Dana/Spicer front axle, the Ford stuff is Spicer, its just marked up alot at the stealership. Stuff like ball-joints I always buy OEM stuff, its just better quality. So to answer your question, buy Spicer.
redneckengineered 09-25-2007, 06:44 AM Without a doubt get Spicer
ther is different levels of spicer
Gold series or OEM from the stealership is what I would run

I hate agreeing with MJ but..................

Brutpwr 09-25-2007, 09:54 AM Top of the line Napa is good too... The Moog stuff can be good but there again there are different grades. We have tried all the brands over the years and now we just go Napa (gold?--can't recall but its their best). Even with the best stuff sometimes even one short course race we can pound them to looseness in a few laps lol!

gotmuddy 09-25-2007, 11:53 AM I have moog ball joints in my 96 f-350. Had them in for about a year now, and seem to be good. Lifetime warranty so I am not all that worried.

Actually, Moog is not lifetime, but they are Satisfaction guarantee.
That Satisfaction guarantee does not have a time limit. :D
Jrod-13 09-25-2007, 12:10 PM I've had great luck with moog, and if it ever does wear out, I'll bring it back.
Same reason i will only run moog TRE's
the SD trucks are famous for losing balljoints
I dont think any of us running older stuff can comment on what lasts or doesnt in the new junk
everyone I know that puts even a mild lift on them eats the front end in record time.
something is up with those vehicles.
steve604 09-25-2007, 05:52 PM thanks for the input guys. it looks like spicer is the brand to use. i'm not sure what napa is like to deal with in the u.s. but here in canada they're not worth going to. prices are high on vehicle specific parts and they always seem to be wrong and the service sucks but they're not bad with general automotive stuff.
does anyone know of a place online that sells the good spicer or motorcraft joints?
nated0g 09-25-2007, 06:28 PM see if rockauto.com sells to canada. they seem to have good prices, with more than just 1 brand.
I bought spicer golds from a hole in the wall parts house behind SaveOn in Langley
cant recall the name
shooter 09-26-2007, 08:45 PM Just a FYI in many instances, Motorcraft parts (especially ball joints and TREs and other suspenion parts) may be from different manufacturer or grade than OEM parts. If OEM parts are avalible I prefer to use them over Motorcraft because generaly OEM is of much higher quality.

They came with a lifetime warranty from oreilly's:flipoff2:
mondtster 09-27-2007, 04:39 PM My dad's SD is bone stock and we replaced his ball joints with some parts store brand ones (sorry, I can't remember what brand) several years ago. They seem to be holding up fine in the stock application anyway. Steering parts are a different story though. That thing will eat more steering parts than you can imagine! I know that every steering part in that front end has been replaced at least once so far and he only has 130k on it.
Personally, I would double check on the warranty on the moog ball joints that are in the truck now. If they have a lifetime warranty, take them back and get another set. I can understand that swapping them out sucks, but if they are free I wouldn't complain a while lot.
Lars915 09-27-2007, 05:41 PM The best joints I ever used were McQuay-Norris from Carquest. They made everything else look like cheap crap. They even had an upper that could be greased with everything assembled. No plastic, all brass races.
Oh, expensive as hell, to. $40 to $45 each.
lil-bronc 09-27-2007, 07:20 PM Buy them at Napa or Autozone with the warranty. They honor the warranties most often, especially if you have your receipt. Spicer is probably the best brand name and is carried in most shops.
On a side note, would Cyroed ball joints last longer?
