: Flowmaster Extremes
blegenam 09-29-2007, 08:04 PM Looking for some advice on new mufflers. How do they sound with a 258??? Right now I have split headers, glasspacks, and duals out the back. Currently, one glass pack decided to blow completely in two. They are only 12 years old. So pretty much straight pipes. I want to quiet it down some, but still want a good rumble. I have also looked at magnaflow, the 4 inch round stainless ones. Not sure if they are just a pretty glasspack or if they muffle some.
Any advice would be appreciated,
ElJeepo79 09-30-2007, 01:43 AM for price and simplicity just replace your blown glasspacks with new ones. I'm running a single glasspack on my 304 and it rumbles good without being obnoxious.
blegenam 09-30-2007, 07:10 AM That really wasn't the question though. I know the easiest and cheapest way is going to be replacing what's there. I'm not saying that won't happen, but I would like a bit more muffling than what was there. It was pretty obnoxious prior to the glasspack blowing apart, now it's really bad.
I would like to hear people opinions on the Flowmasters with the straight six.
Thanks
Little Jeep 09-30-2007, 07:36 AM I am not sure if this helps you are not, but I put the little square Flowmaster muffler on my TJ with the 4.0L. It is pretty quiet at idle, yet when you get on gas you know it has a non stock muffler on it. I didn't want a headache from idling around the trails all day with a real loud muffler, yet I wanted to hear the rummble of the engine.
EDIT, I think mine is the 40 series
The Black Sheep 09-30-2007, 08:44 AM I have a 40 series on my 258. Sounds like a V8 when at idle or u stab the gas. Anybody who knows anything about engines tho can tell its a 6 when u drive off. Other then that the average joe will still come up to u and be like "whoa what do u have under that thing?" The interior resonance can be a pain in the ass, but hey for a trail rig/rock crawler who cares. In general tho it sounds good, way better then glasspacks IMO. Good luck
piratebuggy 09-30-2007, 09:28 AM The Flowmasters have a series number designating the difference in sound quality. Generally the lower the number the more obnoxious the sound in the interior of the vehicle. The 40's will be louder (interior resonance) inside than say the 80 series. They all will have a good rumble outside. Just depends on what you want to hear.
I have some Purple Hornies "Jeep style" glasspacks on my 304 that sounds really cool at idle, not too loud ,just a nice rumble. But when you jump on it any (like pulling up the slight incline on my driveway) it will set off car alarms! About the same noise level as a custom Harley exhaust. I'd rather be quieter than that myself.
If you work in a muffler shop (glad to have moved back to general repair myself) it's easy to get some slightly used (1-2 day old used) Flowmasters that the guys wife told him to get rid of pronto. Got a couple 40's sitting in my garage just like that, might try them on my Jeep eventually to get it quieter not louder. Might stop by a muffler shop or 2 and see if any of the guys have some slightly used Flowmasters that you can pick up cheaper. Be forewarned that they do rust out quicker than you might like.

The hood rats hate me when i go by late and night and set off all the car alarms on the street. What u say is very true . 40 series is the loudest flowmaster, 30 series gets quieter, 50 is even queiter then that. Sometimes after long rides, especially when the top and hard doors are on my ears are still ringing from a bit later. IF i were to ever get another flowmaster, it would most likely be 50 or quieter.
blegenam 10-01-2007, 05:24 AM Well,
I'm not ready to quiet it down completely. I have dealt with pretty much straight pipes for the last 2.5 years as my daily driver so I know how loud they were. I'm going to stop at a muffler shop and get a quote on what it would cost to redo the exhaust with the Extremes after work. Might as well do it right the first time and not worry about it for another hopefully ten years.
Any of you have pics of your set up???
piratebuggy 10-01-2007, 05:27 AM That's the interior resonance killing your eardrums there. 50 series has less interior resonance without giving up the cool tones.
Wanted to clarify what I meant by putting the 40's on to quiet things down- I want to put them on behind the glasspacks. In theory at least it wouldn't produce more backpressure and should damp down the noise level. It's just because I have the stuff to do it setting around, just a question of welding it together.
The Black Sheep 10-01-2007, 05:59 AM Im sorry, i have no pics. Even if i did they wouldn't help u seeing i run a single pipe out the back. Dual exhausts are more suited for high RPM engines and top end horse power. You actually lose on the bottom end, which is kinda where the 258 is at its prime, which was one of the main reasons i didn't go with duals as well.
Of the dual exhausts ive seen tho, both pipes come out just in front of the rear tires or split off at an angle infront of the gas tank and exit by the rear corners just behind the tires. Good luck again.
piratebuggy 10-01-2007, 06:44 AM Heres's some stuff you can make yourself . I got some prebent 3" tubing and welded together a pipr to go over the transfer case from the headers.

Then there's the glasspacks

blegenam 10-01-2007, 07:37 AM My set up currently runs up and over the driveshaft and then out the passenger side straight out the back. The driverside just goes up over the axle and straight out the back. I want to keep the same exit location, but the passenger side is going to need to be 90'ed right after the transfer case and up over the yoke. Then into the muffler and out to the back. I just need some conformation there is enough room for it. I guess the exhaust guy should know. Wonder what he can get those mufflers for. They are spendy.
D'Mann 10-01-2007, 08:07 AM Here is a video of a 258 with a 40 series Flowmaster.

blegenam 10-01-2007, 10:57 AM Wow, I like that sound!!!!
Definitely going to try and get the Flowmasters!!!!!
crashnzuk 10-01-2007, 12:11 PM If you like your glass packs but want to tone them down a bit, get longer ones installed. They will have a nice deep rumble and won't be poppy sounding like a lowrider. With glass packs, the longer they are the smoother and mellower the sound.
Travis..
patriotcj7 10-01-2007, 12:24 PM I have a 258 no cat and a 40 series. Sounds great, especially at idle and just off idle. Usually gets mistaken for a 304 by people who don't know.
atblis 10-01-2007, 04:24 PM I've had 40 series flowmasters before. No more. They're just plain annoying now. Once you grow up, you realize Loud does not = fast, powerful, etc.

crashnzuk 10-01-2007, 05:43 PM Mine has no cat and a Dynomax super turbo. You'd never know it wasn't stock, at least from the driver's seat.

I might get older and wiser, but I'll never grow up:D:D
Think I'm going with the flowmasters, maybe the 50's. Not 100% sure yet.
Thanks
atblis 10-04-2007, 07:34 AM Notice I singled out the 40 series. IIRC the 50s are a lot more mellow.

blegenam 10-04-2007, 07:41 AM Well, my exhaust guy helped me decide yesterday. Pretty much said that he didn't want to mess with trying to stuff a couple of flowmasters under there. He is willing to put new glasspacks on for me. This was the second option, and a good one. With the split header there just isn't much room for two mufflers. So, I'm having glasspacks put on this afternoon. Might try and find a couple of resonator tips, see if that helps. It'll be wierd having functioning exhaust on the Jeep. Been a long time since those glasspacks muffled anything.
Thanks for the replies.
