I'm helping a buddy swap a 4.0 in to his 2.5 '91 YJ. Got the old motor out and he's doing the wiring while I mount the motor. I'm getting my ass kicked (Google) online trying to find out where I need to put the engine mount brackets. The best I could find was "about 3/4 the way up the frame towards the shock mount bracket". Does anyone have a more definitive answer than that? I have nothing to do until I can find this out. Thanks!

You need to attach the brackets to the 4.0L......drop it in there and get it where you want it. Then tack in the mounts, unbolt them from the engine, remove the engine and then fully weld them in. There is no one perfect spot. Been there, done that.....it takes time.

In a perfect world that's the way. Problem is I don't have the t-case for the AX-15. I'd like to get the motor and trans in then pop in the case when it shows up. Reverse engineering so to speak.

Ummm....
You don't need the tcase to mount the engine. Instead of using "reverse engineering" and possibly getting it wrong, just get a tape measure and get it right the first time. The tcase has absolutely no bearing on where your engine goes. Here is what you need to look for:
1. Firewall clearance from the bellhousing and valve cover
2. Front fan clearance from the radiator
3. Left to right placement. Pretty easy since all you have to do is bolt on the motor mounts to the engine, then set the engine in place. The engine mounts will dictate your side to side placement.
Once the engine and mounts are sitting in there, measure from the tranny shaft to each frame rail. If they are equal....your in the middle.
Pretty straight forward. Putting the mounts in there without putting the engine in is just looking for troubles. But hey, what the heck do I know. :grinpimp:
