Making it street legal/licensed?

I went on a trip with my wife and kids to Catalina Island - and there was a 4 seater with plates on it driving around. Very built - said supercharged - lifted - etc. Catalina is a funky little island - is this legal only over there? Or is there a way to make one legal like the little electric cars everywhere in my little beach town?

I bought my Rhino in Colorado and the guy at the dealership said the only state he no's of were you can license them is in Arizona. Last EJS here in Moab they were driving all over the streets, all of them with AZ. plates, but it looks like all they do is slap on some doors, mirrors, and a horn.

We are pretty lax...no doors, just need a mirror and horn...

The one in Catalina Island had a CA plate - also there was a ATV with plates. Must be the island theme.........:confused:

I noticed that too when I was there. I loved it. Almost want to move there so my main vehicle could be a Rhino or somethin haha

its a differant deal on the island only 300 cars are allowed as theres nowhere to go with a street vehicle unless you have a key to the reserve area which is 90% of the island

There were 3 of them at silver lake sand dunes with michigan plates this summer. The older guys that did it were explaining to people all weekend about how to do it (for michigan at least). If motorcycles and shitty old dune buggys can do it then why not.

A year or so ago, I saw an ebay add for a Banshee that had texas plates. He had blown up the motor racing a civic on the highway he said.

I see GEM cars legal all the time in FW as well as 2 seperate SMART cars. In port aransas there are lifted golf carts all over with tx plates on them. you can rent them. have to stay on 30mph or less roads. is what they said.

In Texas state parks/campgrounds, to operate a Golf Cart around the camp grounds it must have a Texas license plate. Ive never gotten around to asking how to go about doing this and the rules that go along with it. Ill ask next time Im down there camping with the In-Laws.

i lived in arizona for a while and saw a rhino goin down the street along with a trx450. then i checked on the dmvs website and you can buy temp tags for 1 doller for 3 days. pretty freakin cool.

There are some places in Granite Bay CA that have Golf Cart lanes, and I've seen them on public roads too. People who live close drive them to go play. I'm sure it's fine and dandy until someone get's hit, killed, and then sued.... then no more will they allow it.

Why do you need a car on Catalina at all... unless you routinely drive to the backside to visit the land :confused: you can walk or bike anything you really need in the city in minutes.

I am pretty sure there is a way to get them licensed I see them running around Ladera Ranch all the time during the summer running the kids down to the pool etc... Ask a cop friend or if you dare sit on the phone for an hour waiting for someone to pick up from the DMV

You can get plates for a atv in Montana and go wherever on any type of road. I'm sure they would allow sidebysides since they have 'cages' and seat belts.

I personally have a Rhino and plan on getting it plated soon. A friend of ours had his plated in AZ. Thank God for owning property in Lake Havasu!

Some Rhino's were CA plated early on, but the loophole they used was closed.

The ones I had seen had DOT tires, mirrors, turn signals, and apparently emmissions issues prevent more from being converted.

I have a RZR, Mule, and Ranger all registered in Texas......However as I have found out in 2 states....that does not mean that they are legal on the street.

This year at JES in Moab we were told if we were caught agian anywhere close to town on the road they would impound the rigs.

We had 5 Texas registered RZR's

Same here in TX.....have been stoped and told would be impounded....said they have never met saftey standards or emmisions requirments and did not care if I had it registered or not.

I live in oregon and I have seen a Ranger , Kubota and a Rhino licensed and driving around town here.the way gas is going i'm sure i will see more before long.I see alot of golf carts.

In Alberta everything (ATV, UTV, dune buggy, dirt bike, Argo, etc) has to be registered and insured if you want to use it anywhere but on private property. Even so it is illegal to operate them on a highway except to cross it. It is however legal to operate on any road that doesn't fall under the highways act, like Forestry roads, and private roads (oil field roads, and the like). There are certain towns that do allow you to ride on the road but they are usually small and remote. One place called Whitecourt allows you to ride ATVs and snowmobiles on the road but only from your house to the trailhead.
