I am forced to build a custom transmission mount for my YJ. I put an AW4 transmission in and the stock mount that came with the YJ/904 does not fit. I have the AW4/XJ stock mount, but that does not either. Can I just build a small steel box for the transmission mount and call it even. Do I need to have a 'rubber' mount on the transmission? If I use heavy gauge steel and build a small box between the transmission and the cross-member shouldn't it be good enough or will I risk breaking the transmission casing?

If you drive your rig on the street you'll want a rubber mount, actually, you'll want a rubbe mount reguardless, too much vibration, not to mention risking trans case damage, if you cant come up with a mount that will work, use the old CJ trick, bolt a short length of rectangular tubing to the trans, and mount rubber bushings at both ends. Are you having clearance issues?

Clearance is no problem-o here. I tried something drastic by taking the stock YJ/904 mount and welding it together with the XJ/AW4 mount. Although this worked I needed a 2" kit for the cross-member to fit the thing in. When I nail the gas the transmission bangs against the underside of the jeep tub. This is NOT the solution I need to use. Just asking for problems. I like the tube idea though. I am going to home depot tonight to get some metal tubing. I'll look for some bushings there also.. Thanx for the idea that might just work... :D
