I'm about to put an 8.8 in my 4 banger. I took the axle to the local 4x shop the other day to have the brackets and such welded on. The owner questioned why I was upgrading from a D35. I thought he was joking. He said that the 2.5l doesn't have enough power to snap a shaft and that he runs 36s on his and hammers the shit out of it (lincoln locked) with no problems. I already bought the 8.8 so I'm not thinking about keeping the 35. I just wondered if he's right of full of it.

all depends on how you drive it. i would definitely keep the 8.8 though.

A 4 banger can snap Dana 35 shafts quite easily. It's not only power that can snap a shaft, but the precarious situations you can get into. The concern isn't only with the shaft size, but the housing strength, carrier strength, ring and gear strength...$hit...the Dana 35 lacking in everything!

BS. I've seen my share of broken D35's in 4 bangers. When they are locked is when they get really tender.

First, find a new shop. This guy doesnt know what he's talking about. A dana 35 WILL break eventually if you wheel with it, even if you're easy on the gas pedal. I broke my 35 while on a winch cable, just idling up rocker-knocker in Moab. I wasnt even on the gas and none of the tires were stuck in a hole or anything. I guess it was just fatigued from lots of wheelin' time. Anyway, go with the 8.8 and don't listen to that jackass. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

With a sick old Renix 4.0 I broke my D35c 4 times, open with 31's. I do tend however to follow the "when in doubt, throttle out rule." I swapped to the 8.8" with 35" swampers measuring 36", I could sidestep the clutch at 4500 and the 8.8" would not care at all. Keep the 8.8, if not for strength, then for disc brakes.

Hrmmm, i break nothing in my d-35... O wait, everytime i go out, i break a fricken carrier, spider gears, and a crosspin... have never however? broken a shaft although i carry 4 spares.. i too am going the 8.8" route by the end of the month... Measly 33" tires and an open diff, im not even throttle happy...

the guy has a lincoln locked d35? I hope its not a c clip. Is there anyway to get c clips out of a lincoln locked axle?
