: Tons of blow by on 4.0L

Ok on my 88 Comanche I have discovered a ungodly amount of blow by with it. It runs good but I notice within the last couple of days she has been puking out oil everywhere and I went to check my airfilter and it is soaked in oil. Air tube and everything is overed in oil. Now everywhere I go she leaks everywhere. I know the rear main is shot and she acts up every no and then as some weeks she doesnt leak a drop while others she needs a quart a week.

So my main question is what is the deal with all that oil in the air filter. I bought a oil breather filter to bypass that tube that connects to the airbox in order to keep my intake system clean. I wont put it on till I hear some feed back from you guys.

Get a PVC Valve as well and for the oil leaks I would get some Valvoline Maxlife in anything from 10W40 to 20W50. I keep Maxlife in my 88 Bronco and our 93 Jeep as well as my mother in Laws 95 F150 for my wifes 03 Tundra I use Maxlife Synthetic. This is the best high mileage oil on the market and I worked off and on for Valvoline Instant Oil Change for three years now and it will work, it may take a few times but it will work.

Before you right your motor off, make sure you have your PCV hooked up right.

Magical mystery snake oil will not help if something is mechanically wrong with your motor (like it's worn the fuck out).

Where exactly are the PCV valves on these things? I would have replaced it but I cannot find it to save my soul.

the pcv valve sits atop the valve cover and a hose runs from it to the intake. replacing the pcv valve should help, otherwise you could jb weld a piece of sheetmetal under the pcv valve to act as a baffle or splashguard to keep oil from getting down the hose and into the intake.

The 4.0 doesn't have a PVC valve, per Se', it has a calibrated orifice located at the rear of the valve cover.
It may be clogged; however, since your talking about an '88, it probably needs rings, valve guides and valve oil seals.
You can try to solve the blow-by by removing the valve cover and thoroughly cleaning the inside, including the baffles. Then replace the "PVC" valve assembly. If that doesn't do it, I'm afraid a ring job is in order.

Yeah dude that sucks. Unless you have been operating this thine under some really weird conditions (High speeds low loads) you probably have significant wear issues or failure. Generally when blow by gets that excessive its worn rings or a cracked piston. Gases from the combustion process pressurize the crank case. Generally this will overwhelm your crank case ventilation system causing oil upstream of the throttle. First do compression and leakage checks on the engine before you trash it. Another possible issue would be oil vapor from the upper valve train. Does this have stock lifters, cam, and rockers?

Yeah all stock componants. It only has 95K on it also. I did however run it on the interstate yesterday 75 mph with no load. I usually take the highway as she doesnt do to well on the interstate with keeping up with traffic.

And yes the oil vapor seems to be pretty big as when she is driven and I open the oil fill on the VC I can see the vapor in there. And another wierd thing is she doesnt smoke at all even with all this oil in the intake.

You really need to do compression and leakage on this engine. A major mechanical issue will no be intermittent ( however, I have seen some strange instances of cracked piston top lands causing intermittent oil consumption). If your crank case ventilation system is blocked that would cause an excess of crank case pressure possible causing oil leaks through seals and other gaskets. However, that does not jive with oil in the air inlet system. Next time I am around my toatled jeep I will look at the 4.0l crank case ventilation system and see if there would be any way these conditions can exist without a worn motor or cracked piston.
