What's the deal on boresighters? What good brands are out there? What brands should be avoided?

I'm considering a .30 cal boresghter, so any suggestions are always appreciated.

make sure you remove it before firing a bullet down range

i have been meaning to get one of the "arbor" style as the "stick in the muzzle" style are pretty worthless if you have a brake.

far...right

I have one of the cheapie ones that fits everything from a .17 to a .50. It is one the the best $40 ive ever spent. when you get a new gun or change scopes its very nice to get it close and then when you auctually fire the gun for the first time it is very close to dead on, just fine tuning needed...

I've been looking at those too, since I own several rifles with brakes, and don't want to end up with one that I cannot use. But since I don't know anything about them, I don't know what to look for, or what to avoid.

what about the brass casing looking type? Are they really worth the extra money (unless you've got the kinda that can adjust to different sizes)

I was wondering about that too. I don't own one, but I'd like to get one in 5.56, a .308, a .45ACP, and a 9mm.

This is the one I'm going to order next week:

All I want is to get on paper, and this one seems to do that just fine in a multitude of calibres, and at a great price. None of the guns I'm sighting have a muzzle device.

That's the arbor style mentioned above.

All but one of my rifles are .30 cal, and all have muzzle devices of some kind. I just need something with either a long enough shank to fit past the muzzle device while still being accurate, or something that fits in the chamber, similar to the pic.

I just don't know enough about them to make an educated guess as to which one to get...

For years I set up rifles for customers using the Leupold magnetic boresighter. We had laser, arbor types but they weren't nearly as reliable/accurate as the Leupold. Don't ask me to explain how they work or why they produce consistent results cause I never took the time to think about it.

Except for very small bores (<.22) I use my calibrated eyeball if I can't put my hands on the Leupold. Never been off the paper yet :D

I also use a Leupold mag boresighter and it works great, I am always within a couple inches of center at 100 yards.
