: Ford Transfer Case Swap?
CSmith 10-07-2007, 01:24 PM I am putting a Cummins 4BT and a ZF five speed in my terra. The tranny that I picked up came with a BW1356 bolted to it but it is way too wide to fit between the frame rails. I am planning on switching to a driver's side front axle anyway since the Cummins exhaust drops down the passenger side. Has anybody found a ford transfer case that will fit without interfering with the frame or floorboards? I'm not much of a ford guy and don't have much first hand experience with the older transfer cases. Thanks.
I would Imagine that a ford NP205 would fit the bill as it is slightly more compact than the BW t-cases are.
There are a couple of people on this board running this transfercase in Scout II's.
I'm also ninety percent sure it will bolt to the back of your ZF.

larboc@hotmail.com 10-07-2007, 05:26 PM I'm running both!
yes 1356 is WAY to wide.
An np205 ford will fit no problem stock clocking, and I even clocked mine up quite a bit in the 1356-205 project.
Sure would be nice to see a vendor make an aftermarket spud shaft for this setup wouldn't it?
One issue you will run into is rear output shifter pin clearence. You will need to cut a notch in the ZF's tail housing, other than that you are set.
CSmith 10-08-2007, 07:24 AM Thanks. I'll be fabbing up a new transfer case shifter and linkage.
RustoleumWhite 10-09-2007, 09:11 PM How about turning the 1356 into a doubler!!
D.D. Machine has/was working on a doubler basted on a couple of the ford planetary t-cases. Maybe an option then you can put a potential variety of t-cases behind it, you should have the room in the Terra... assuming that where your putting the 4BT

Actually I am going to be using an Advance Adapters spud designed for the Ford 205 to be put behind a Dodge NV4500 light duty (withh the 23 spline output) on my Scout 727.

n.e. more info on this?
larboc@hotmail.com 10-10-2007, 05:44 AM here is a link to my 1356-fordnp205 doubler build up. I have since dressed everything up and am just waiting to weld the plug I made into the hole in the case.
larboc@hotmail.com 10-10-2007, 05:46 AM o, also, you will have to run the shifters for the np205 out the back of the case. I am almost done with this as well and I will try to get pics up soon. Not as hard as you think. The pins are standard 3/4" cold rolled rod.

I was talking about an intermediate spud shaft to go between the 1356 and 205.
Why use the AA adapter? I have seen OEM adapters in junkyards to go from the 727 to a 205 in older dodges.
I haven't priced it, but I would assume that since your adapter is an AA part, it's going to be about $10,000. Might pay to do some junkyard scouring.

Yeah it's going in the terra. It isn't an extreme rig, a single transfer case should be fine for my needs. I'd like to do an 800 next, then I may be thinking doubler.
I'm driving over near bremerton on saturday, pulling the engine out of the 'tater chip van and driving home the same day. My wife wants to go, she thinks it will be "fun".
Larboc, I would be interested to see pics of your shifters when you are done.

I made my own adapters as I have found that no one makes a texas style Dana 20 to round Ford pattern. I just use the spud shaft because it's new and I don't have to go looking in the junk yard for one. Does your junk yard spud have a 23 spline female to 31 spline male for the Ford? To my knowledge that was never made as an OEM piece. The AA spud actually is only $200. I do like your build, however. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

larboc@hotmail.com 10-11-2007, 05:13 AM You can swap input shafts in the 205. I don't know what dodge spline was oem on the 205.

If you have the extra time, look up Duffy/D.D. Machine and pull out to his place. Not too far out of your way (especially if you take the time/effort to take the Kingston/Mukilteo ferry back).
You may not *need* the extra t-case.... but who knows, It *might* be the cheapest way to your goal. Plus Duffy knows a damn lot about this crap and is a pretty innovative machinist.
Just an option to explore. If you need a place to crash for the night (thats allot of driving) drop a line.
Have you tried posting this on the Ford section? Don't know what its like there, but you might be able to put a D20 (ford) in there and get what you want.
larboc@hotmail.com 10-11-2007, 10:17 AM Dana 20's bring the suck. WAY too small a t-case to go in a scout, let alone behind a cummins and a ZF.
If you are looking to have a 1356-205 31-spline intermediate shaft made at d&d lmk. as long as it would be under 300 I'd be down for one.

Since your going to have a Diesel, you will have max torque at low RPM so a doulber might not even be needed. A 4 speed tranny (700R4) would help keep the RPMs down low when hwy driving. The Ford NP205 looks to be the same size as the GM version so it should fit between the frame rails.

gentrysgarage 10-15-2007, 11:57 AM FWIW,
The C6 BW 13-56 will directly swap with the NP205...I don't see were they would change the for the ZF.

CSmith 10-15-2007, 12:08 PM You did read the first post, right?:D
gentrysgarage 10-15-2007, 12:43 PM You're killin' me CS,
The 13-56 is approx 23" wide the 205 is 17"
CSmith 10-15-2007, 01:24 PM Sounds like it would fit fine.:grinpimp:
