So I need a decent fixed blade knife to carry on my pack when hiking or for use when camping.

The only ones I've looked at were the Benchmade 140 and 156. Anyone got any suggestions or comments?

Something cheap... Go to your local sporting goods store and buy a nice $40 knife and be done... Go home, put an edge on it yourself and throw it in the back... I personally will never spend more then $40 on another knife. I lose them too often and the quality isn't THAT much better...IMO

The only fixed blade knife I own is a 12" carbide that is about 1/4" thick, that I take as a "last defense" when I go hunting. For usable knives, I buy the lots that places like sportsmans warehouse sells. Usually about 15-20 knives for like $25 or so. I"ll go through the knives in about a year. The benefits are obvious...cheap, sharp (though not always durably so) and you can give them to your buddies if they forget thier knife. And it's no big deal if you lose a few.

Don't really plan on losing it, I'm pretty good about keeping up with my knives. Want a good quality one that will last.

I picked up a Cold Steel Master Hunter for camping and general fuckoffery.
Its only about a 5" blade but pretty thick, serves its purpose, price was great at the time and location of purchase, good grip, heavy butt to smash things, sleek and durable sheath, I like it. Sure would like to get a big pig sticker though as last defense when I'm out in the mountains.

Really like that one after searching it. Good price, like the looks and size of it too.

ive been weilding my crkt stealth for over a year now, it doesnt hold a edge very well but i throw, toss, hammer, pry, wedge, slam and beat the everliving tar out of it and it hasnt fased it at all.

4-3/4" blade
kydex grip sheath
multi possion clip
lace and strap holes to wrap and weave into bags and stuff.

the handle was wrapped with some ninja sword style cloth on it that eventualy tore and came off, the main problem with that is that it need that to clip in the sheath. i rewraped it with med cloth tape and all is well so far.

i scored mine for $25 at big5 on sale, typicaly goes for $69.

Now, partially serrated or straight? I'm leaning towards straight but I've found lots of good uses for my partially serrated EDC Gerber in the past.

99.99999999999999999% of all my needs are met with a Gerber folding (classic Buck look alike but weighs less by about 25%). The last little % is a fixed blade Western skinner I've had since Xmas 1964 and yes its been used fer a whole lot more than it was designed for.

Again where the SOG comes into play. I've used the serrated part as a saw and it still held its edge well enough later in the day to gut a deer. I've probably sharpened the knife once a year in the past 8

I have a 1943 Marine Ka-Bar my uncle gave me that he used in the pacific in WW2. This knife is understandably indestructable. Dig holes cut tree limbs throw it etc etc. Try ebay you might find one cheap. It hasnt let me down all these years.

Ontario makes a line of knives that I think are fantastic. I have a RATK2 and a RAT-5. Both can be found for reasonable prices on the net (>$100) and have been completely reliable. Oh, and American made -

I usualy get around some sort of a crafts fair, swap meet, or something every 5-10 years and pick up something custom for a very decent price. Just make sure that the steel is good and not some indian crap...no matter what the rating on the blade says.

Old WWII bayonets make awesome utility knives, usually excellent steel and super stout.

If your straight edge is too fancy, or too big its not worth crap. The biggest edge you need is about 6-8" with a good flat back to wack while breaking a pelvis durring gutting. The rest of the time a good folder will work, my last benchmade has been good to me.
