: Some of Our Work
texican 06-19-2002, 03:14 PM Some pix of a truck we did in Jan-Feb, it's an 82 FJ40 we installed a crate TBI 350 couple to an NV4500. You might take note of the exhaust,Coupled to a pair of center dump Ram Horns is a factory crossover from a mid 60's GM truck, makes for a very clean installation.

texican 06-19-2002, 03:15 PM Another shot.

wngrog 06-19-2002, 03:17 PM Keep up this pacde and you won't be a newbie long!
For what it is worth, Butch did a fantastic job on this rig.
It was already a fine FJ-40, I think it is a 81 or so. Had 100,000 on a 2F, factory p/s, factory air...zero rust.
Guy comes in and wants a conversion the right way and Baker hooked him up!
texican 06-19-2002, 03:18 PM This shot shows a good angle on the crossover
texican 06-19-2002, 03:19 PM And in it's new home....
Butch
texican 06-19-2002, 03:21 PM It was an absolute PITA to deal with the factory PS on this job, much rather have Saginaw or Scout....
Butch
texican 06-19-2002, 03:22 PM Tranny crossmember.......
texican 06-19-2002, 03:28 PM Finished, note the high $$$$ Be-cool radiator, seemed as if the only option for this, he wanted a factory look and did not want cooling problems with the factory AC....so far so good, runs right at the 195 thermostat, even on our 100+ days.
Butch
orangefj45 06-19-2002, 08:09 PM about time we saw some of your work on the board!
looks good butch!:smokin:
Shawn 06-19-2002, 08:40 PM Very Nice,

see more pictures...

Donald Butcher 06-20-2002, 10:50 AM keep the pictures coming Texican! That is one clean conversion!
 :usa:
Nice work there... by chance do you recall what the rear driveline ended up being in length?
Was the truck lifted at all?
thanks
texican 06-20-2002, 11:32 AM Don't remember length, I do know the rear of the T-case was 3" further back than the stock location. The shifter on the tranny and the t case were close enough that the factory rubber mat fit.
It has a 3" Ironman kit.

ginericfj80 06-20-2002, 10:16 PM Butch,
Do you have a part number for the crossover pipe or did you have that made? I have the rams horns on my TBI 350 in my 60 but I have it crossover behind the transfer which lately has been a PITA as I've had the tranny and transfer out several times. Plus it runs right next to my fuel lines and I don't particularly care for that.
Eric V.
texican 06-20-2002, 10:55 PM I have a part number for it at the shop, it's a Walker, OEM application is 58-66 Chevy pickup with a 283 engine. BTW one of my buds in Ft Smith has used several of these of FJ60 conversions, and I have used 2 on Jeeps so its not FJ40 exclusive.
Do you have O'Reilly's in your area, that is my source.
Butch
ginericfj80 06-21-2002, 05:54 AM No OReilly's out here. But if it is made by Walker most any exhaust shop could get it. Thanks for the info. I probably won't change out the exhaust until the end of summer. I'm going to a 700r4 with a NP203 gear reduction box to my split case. When I do that I'll need to redo the exhaust. Thanks so much for the info. What is always amazing to me is how regionalized info can be and how different regions build stuff differently.
texican 06-21-2002, 06:23 AM I know, a trip to GSMTR last year and the one to Moab this year confirms this.
The crossover was pure accident, we had a pickup of this era come in for duals, we usually cut them off below the manifolds and run them out from there, after I looked it over good, I decided to remove it in one piece, this crossover is on Old Yeller now, and I started using them, I have shipped them out and given the number to countless guys since then.
The part number is 42087
Butch
Butch,
Do you have a part # for the Be Cool radiator? I'm battling the overheating blues and I'm looking for a good solution. Does it mount into the original radiator bracket? Do you recall the price and best place to get one. Just researching.
texican 07-05-2002, 06:44 PM Call Advance Adapters, that's where I got it, it was labeled with AA part #'s, the only place it said Be- Cool was on the top.
It was, are you sitting?
$625.......better than ruining an engine though or having to fight issues on a major $$ job like this , it fits the cactory cradle, we tried several era LC shrouds and modified the 78-82 era, most of the mods were just rolling the lip back next to the radiator so it did not rub on the aluminum.
BTW the truck is back in my shop now for some more upgrades,
( ARB's and 33" tires & new wheels) took it out today, AC on, close to 100 here temp stayed right at the 195 mark which is the thermostat in the engine.
Butch
I just ordered the pipe last week from NAPA. None avail west of the Mississippi, so it will be here next week. They said there were like 200+ in stock back "east". I can list the part number when it shows up. I ordered for 1965 C10 w/283 2wd.
I am in the middle of my TBI conversion and also am interested in running single tube out the back. What size tube and what muffler are you using?
:usa: :usa:
texican 07-05-2002, 07:06 PM We use 2 1/4" all the way out, and use a Flowmaster 2 chamber, we have also used the dual outlet Flowmaster and 2 tailpipes on a couple of cruisers for a bit more sound, have mounted the dual outlet forward of the axle to route the tails to either side of the truck and have mounted it aft of the axle with 2 turndowns, lots of little options once you get past the transfer case.
Butch
Sitting down, damn I better take a nap then drink  I'm still researching.
Thanks
oakley 07-06-2002, 10:32 PM I got that crossover at NAPA. I live in Colorado and thay had it to me the next day. I looked for the reciept and can't find it so I can't post the part number but it was in one of thier books for a 1966 Chevy pickup with a 283. Butch what did you use for the spacer where the old heat riser would go? do you have a source and part number for the spacer?
Greg
The NAPA crossover I ordered is 42087 (it is Walker). The spacer is also avail for the later Corvette. When they went to EFI, they still had the rams horns and no need for a riser so it is just a spacer (I'm just going to remove the flap from my old riser)
:usa:
texican 07-08-2002, 04:31 PM I keep the heat riser blanks in stock, however they must be hard to locate because I have had to ship them everywhere.......
Hey Yoda, why are you un employed?
Wanna relocate to Tex???
Butch
Was working for Boeing in the automotive fleet. 13 years seniority was not enough. Had 80 mechs, layed off 22 (so far), I was 21. I am taking a pre-employment piss test and physical tomorrow AM. After that I get my DOT card and on my way to Mech at Metro (bus garage).
Where did you mount the ECU on the FJ? I'm putting on TBI from an 88 chev truck. I just enlarged the hole below the glovebox to fit the GM firewall plug. Lookin good, but wondering now where I am actually going to put it. I have had some water leak in the glove box area so may have to extend and mount under seat. Might fab a false firewall in front of passenger side and mount behind it. I have the prom for a stick and one for an auto.
What do you get for the spacer, or can you give me the part # for it? I'm still waiting for the crossover.
:usa:
texican 07-10-2002, 05:10 AM It's mounted in the OEM bracket in the floor of the glove box, you could easily mounted it to the underside of the glove box.
No part number here at home, I'll check at work for one.
Butch
Do you have a pic of the ECU?
The underside of the glovebox was my origonal intent. It may still end up there but I would have to relocate the heater intake duct. I did get the factory holder for it. Just finished replacing 4 broken studs on my ram's horns. Was seriously thinking of buying new, but......
Have you ever used the Corvette manifolds like these? Do they clear the mount on your pix?
texican 07-10-2002, 06:48 AM Don't have a pix of the ECU, if they are the 2" rams horns like those in my pix they clear everything fine. oops I did not wait for the pic to load of your manifolds, I don't know if the crossover will work with these......they look a bit shorter than mine.
Butch
These were just some options I was looking at. They look sweet, but I didn't get the bid on ebay. They are actually about 1 1/2-2" longer than rams horns.
The ones on mine are the standard 2" rams.
David
4XForce 07-10-2002, 07:50 PM Very clean installation. Do you have part numbers and a source for the rams horn manifolds?
texican 07-10-2002, 08:37 PM They are standard OEM on all 265 283 327 Chev V8 engines from 1955-73 or so. They were also standard on all corvettes up until way into the 80's ,some Vettes used 2 1/2" outlets I've been told, but all the Vettes we have ever done exhaust on have the 2" outlets.
I have a few used sets, if you can't locate them, PM me if you are interested.
Butch
I take it you cut off that extra flange from the crossover to weld on the next piece of pipe. I like the location for your oxy sensor. Does your exhaust shop make that up for you or is it a purchased part that is avail? Also, what Chevy used the spacer that replaced the heat riser? I thought it was corvette, but the dealer said it was not on the vette. (he also did not seem to know what he was looking for)
Thanks,
David
texican 07-15-2002, 07:37 PM Yes we chop the flange off, and weld the 2 1/4" pipe there, the bung for the O2 is a spark plug anti fouler, you know the things that space the plug out of the head?
You simply buy a 4 pack, cut the male end off, clean the inside out with a die grinder for the o2 to slip inside, weld it in. It's the larger size spark plug that you need to buy, not the one with the 5/8" head, I think if you ask for a set to fit a 66 289 Mustang it will be the right one.
The heat riser blanks are , evidently hard to locate. I have sent them everywhere. PM me if you can't locate one.
Butch
Cool, Thanks for the info
