: Differences in Dana 60 fronts?
So what parts are interchangabe between different Dana 60 fronts - like between Fords, chevy's and Dodges?
I am picking up my Dodge Dana 60 front this afternoon (woohoo!) but it seems one of the ears where one of the calipers bolts on has been cut off... I guess I could weld a replacement on there, but am wondering what donors I could get one from to swap out...
Also, what are the differences in shafts from Dodge to Ford to Chevy?
thanks <IMG SRC="smilies/glasses.gif" border="0">
Thats a tough one, there are MANY little differences in the individual parts. For instance BJ D60's have an integral caliper bracket molded into the knuckle... KP its seperate. Ford stubs, hubs and spindles are a 1/2" shorter than the CHevy and dodge stuff. Chevy spindles use 6 bolts, Frod uses 5, BJ uses 4 they all could be interchange-able if you re-drilled them I believe. Ford rotors and calipers are not interchangable with Chevys... ETC....
<IMG SRC="smilies/massey.gif" border="0">
Thanks Ant <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
The reason I ask, if I may be able to get a set of knuckles off a GM 60 front, and was wondering if they could be swapped to the Dodge 60...
emsoffroad 10-24-2001, 01:35 PM In the 80's the GM and the Dodge are almost the same. Same hub rotor caliper stub ect. Fords are by them self. You can swap the knuckle out on any of the king pin style.
Garza 10-24-2001, 01:39 PM Hey David, Im not sure how much I can help but this is what I have figured out so far. I have a 93 front Dodge D60(last year for leaf spring) and my buddy has an 83 Chevy one. The only thing missing on my front was the calipers. I looked at his and talked to a few other people about it and these are my conclusions. The Dodges and Cheveys are virtually the same from the knuckle out (assuming both are kingpin, pass side diff ect..). I went to my local parts store and got the calipers for an 83 chev K30 instead of the Dodge because they didn't have an application for a D700 Dodge. I did notice that on my inner shafts, they neck down at the splines and where the shaft meets the "ears" on the Dodge <IMG SRC="smilies/crybaby2.gif" border="0"> Doubt it is very easy to break anyway. My friends GM inner shafts are 1.5" thick all the way. But the outer 30 spline stubs were identical on both. I also had a chance to look at a RR driver side diff from an early F350. No way any of that stuff would work it was all different. Basically the compatibility between Dodge and GM is a go and the Ford is of no use to us. BTW, I still need to make sure those calipers are going to fit mine and I will let you know soon if you'd like.
fcfred 10-24-2001, 01:40 PM i have a 1979 dodge d-60 front from a d-600 and it has the 8 bolt external hubs. The only problem I have found is that no-one makes an external bolt on hub for a 35 spline stubshaft, so consider that if you were thinking of going to 35 spline stubbies,
Thanks guys - and yes, I would be interested in the caliper fitment and cost as well (since I will be buying them also).
The axle I am getting has one drive flange, and one Selectro lockout hub.. yet another issue I am gonna have to deal with.
Then again, if I go ARB I may just leave it that way <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">
Yeah chevy and KP dodge knuckles should be the same. Rebuilt calipers for CHevy D60 are only like $50 each loaded.

Yep, thats about right. And then you have to buy the hardware kit, that thing is like $30. Oh yea, and get ready for some grinding if you are running 15" wheels.
Ok, I pisked up the axle, but I am starting to have doubts about it...
http://www.tennessee4x4.com/toyota/images/60/60F-03.jpg
It is missing both calipers - not a big problem I guess.
On one side someone too a torch and cut through the caliper mounting plate - so it would need a new one of those (the sandwish in there and bolt on, right?)
As I said - it has one hub, and one drive flange. It looks like they are not the internal style hubs - is that a big problem, or what?
I just got it, so I don;t know any more than that right now...
Any thoughts on this? Problems? Weaknesses? <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">
BTW - I measured and it is 67" WMF to WMF
Willy 10-24-2001, 09:39 PM I would be willing to bet you my 60 that it has a 4.88 gear and it is welded up inside. Oh yeah just to know that front end came from a pulling truck from Alabama or Mississipii one. Junk the lock out and run drive flanges and an ARB since you are fond of them and I have never seen one of them break in a 60 <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Seems like everyone knows the story on this axle bu tme <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">
I haven't checked yet, but he never said anything about it being welded... Oh well <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">
I was thinking of going that route anyway - ARB and drive flanges would not be a problem <IMG SRC="smilies/glasses.gif" border="0">
convertiyota 10-25-2001, 05:23 AM What's the perch width on that thing just out of curiousity?? <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

I know your asking DRM, but my front Dodge is 32.5 center of perches. I am cutting the long side down 3.5" to match the Toy width. BTW mine was dually so it was a little wider due to the hubs. I am having the hubs machined to single wheel offset. Just thought id share
<IMG SRC="smilies/beer.gif" border="0">
I will not be narrowing the housing (at least I don;t plan to right now) so I will be outboarding the springs to fit the perches.

I thought about that, but my rear D60 is only 65" WMS-WMS so It will kinda even out if I narrow the front. Plus I think im going with the 44044's up front so I am going to make a new front mount to get an inch of lift there and move the axle forward some, but I need to check on the 44044 stats again
<IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">
My rear 60 is only about 65"-66" as well, which is perfect for a 67" wide front axle...
First off, those look like D44 rotors in the pic?? Secondly the caliper bracket does bolt on so its cake to change but expensive. You can swap the hubs and lockouts to the internal style which are a bit stronger. Throw on some of Ant's hi-steer arms and your ready to rock!!
<IMG SRC="smilies/massey.gif" border="0">
Shadow man 10-25-2001, 10:08 AM Save yourself ALOT of grief and don't run selectros! Go strait to hub flanges. I had "Donovan" who is on this board, make me a set of four flanges. The selectros break very easy, at least for me. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> Also Dynabigbucks is supposed to have flanges now. <IMG SRC="smilies/usa.gif" border="0">
convertiyota 10-25-2001, 10:32 AM What's the perch width on a chevy 60?? Is it 32.5", too??
fcfred 10-25-2001, 10:33 AM i've been looking into the same problems with hubs on my axle
if you can find the serial number you can look it up o this site http://www.patooyee.alloffroad.com/index.html
under the bill of materil list
it just helps in the area of figuring out what you got
then go to http://www.gohumvee.com and download and print the dana 60 manual
it takes forever, but it's free
I have heard that the internal hubs are no stronger than the external, and in fact that they loosen up and then can not be tightened to the knuckle, but who knows for sure.
I'm going to go with either the external selctros if I keep the 30 spline stub shafts or go with drive flanges especially if I switch to 35 spline stub shafts, since I have not yet found an external bolt on hub for a 35 spline stub shaft
I think I will try and track down that Donovan guy and see what he sells
I'm currently tearing mine 60 apart
and it feels like xmas morning
congrats DRM

I dunno - anyone got pics of what 60 rotots are supposed to look like?

ok <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">
You can swap the hubs and lockouts to the internal style which are a bit stronger.
I would guess this would also be expensive as well to replace the hubs and lockouts?

Price? <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
I was actually gonna make my own, but am always interested in options...
and thanks fcfred - good info, I will check that stuff out asap <IMG SRC="smilies/glasses.gif" border="0">
LC Hamma 10-25-2001, 12:29 PM Let me guess....You got it from Thumperzr3
in Ohio? <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0"> Have you checked the for sale
section in YOUR message board <IMG SRC="smilies/question.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0"> Someone has a pair of

You can get your knuckle rebuild parts from
Jim's Off Road (865)-482-6912. He's in your
neck of the woods. Your rotors are fine! I
have some D60 front rotors just like that.
Flange thicknesses differ from manufacturer,
but the rotor/pad cotnact areas are all the
same. That gohumvee web site only shows the
closed knuckle style, not the kingpin, which
is what we are talking about here. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> I
think the drive flange/ARB is a good idea.
That's what I'm building up on one of my LC's. Summers Bros. sells the 35 spline drive
flanges, FYI, if you wanted to go that route.
They are VERY WELL constructed. Or, you can have Moser rebroach your existing
flanges for $45 bucks each. They did an
excellent job on the ones I sent them.
Although, they did machine off a good bit of
material on the inside of the flange when
they trued it up on the lathe. Warn has 35
spline lockouts available for your
application, too. Good luck w/your rebuild.
I hope you didn't pay too much for that

Garza 10-25-2001, 01:45 PM I got my front D60 for $350 <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0"> . Like I said it was only missing the calipers. Plus its from a 93 so all my bearings and seals are still good. And the manual locking Spicer hubs are still good I do have to spend the $$ to have the longside cut and the hubs machined to single wheel though <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0"> . Oh well for $350 I couldnt have asked for any more I guess.

time to re read the gohumvee manual. it seems to me it covers every dana 60,

Well, I paid $700 for it, and although it was missing calipers and had one drive flange and one lockout hub, I thought it was a decent price for what I got - expecially considering the 4.88 gears.
ThumperZR3 07-29-2002, 11:34 PM Dang, no wonder my ears were burning...... lol ..... Now where do i start????
1) Did DRM buy this from me?
David replied... "in a roundabout way"
It was a very roundabout way!
I found this D60, told a buddy about it, he went to look at it, called me 'bout it, Then i drove a hell of a ways to help him pick the stuff up cause he couldn't get any "Volunteers" to help, hauled it back home, then he changed his mind on wanting to build a trail rider out of it and decided to sell the stuff... this is the roundabout part -- since I had it, he wanted me to post it for sale, so i did. But this D60 never belonged to me, i was just posting it for him. David didn't deal with me on it, he dealt with him. David didn't meet me to pick it up, he met him. And most importantly, David didn't pay me the money, damn..lol, he paid him. So do you see where I fit in this, A Very Roundabout way....lol but to be PC.... No DRM did not buy this from me, but yes it is the same one that I had listed for sale.
2) In all my ads I listed it had a "Miller Locker", it's welded... and I told everyone....
3) Chuck claimed I caught some flack on the price, I don't recall any flack by anyone, but I don't always know what goes on behind my back...lol... but if anyone did, they never did it to me.... I do remember talking to Chuck about this front and a few other times about various parts I had listed in the past... which also, the D60 was sold to DRM for way less then what he told me I was allowed to sell it for.
4)also the mismatched lockouts are not a mistake, just incase some are thinking that, some truck pullers do that.
Wow...lol...that should cover it.... just incase it sounds like I'm angry.... I hope it doesn't... but I'm not..... It's just when I read these posts it made me sound like a bad guy, like I didn't tell ya about the 60 and everything... so I just wanted to clear the air.....
Later ya'll
8 months late on posting but WTF you were here
