: horable bumpsteer after new teraflex high steer install
04Rubi 10-15-2007, 06:45 PM I own a 2004 TJ with RE 4.5 Long Arm and 35's I just installed Teraflex's High steer kit followed the directions got it alingned. I know have a lot of bump steer at speeds over 45mph with the old steering I never had this problem any suggestion on how I can fix this.
make sure your trac bar and teh drag link / tie rod are in teh same plane...tehy prolly were untill you lowered teh angle of teh drag link with the high steer kit.
Grnscru 10-16-2007, 08:58 AM Sounds like you need to move the axle mount of the trackbar up some to make up for moving the draglink axle side up with the high steer kit.
Action Fab 10-16-2007, 09:07 AM you probably need to take the drop pitmen off.
Johno33772 10-16-2007, 09:11 PM I had the same problem with mine, re-installed the original Pitman arm & installed a steering dampner to help. Now I can run 80 & shes perfect.
Greg_Volkman 10-16-2007, 10:42 PM I was told a lot of guys had problems with these - and that you need to relocate the sway bar mounts on the axle. Is this worth it? I found it for $379 locally and am debating it verses a custom set-up. Tera doesn't have the best name in reliability.
Action Fab 10-17-2007, 06:17 AM NO! mine sucks. the knuckle is awsome but the alum. arms are crap.
SHNIPE 10-22-2007, 12:11 PM jsut replace the tie rod with some heavy wall tubing and move the trackbar up higher and itll be perfect.

:smokin:
Or build your own like I did when I installed my Teraflex hi clearence setup
SHNIPE 10-22-2007, 04:25 PM I went with Ballistic Fab Trackbar Bracket. Low cost and strong

Richard w 05-24-2008, 09:38 AM Does any one have pic's or the track bar after relocating it to solve problem, I belive I am having the same problem.
I also have used a 4" drop pitman arm to get correct steering angel.

how much lift? what set up?
no way there is a need for a 4" drop pitman... in less you running like 8-10in lift and stock steering
TNTCUSTOMS setup(just to show the parallelizim of the tracbar and drag link)

This one looks like the JKS trac bar mount

and there is about a million different ways of doing it.
I fabbed my own "over the axle" bracket for my D30 and hi steer, cheaper, no bump steer
The big key is to have the drag link and trac-bar parallel
The Black Sheep 05-24-2008, 11:16 AM Sounds like you don;t need a drop pitman arm that came with it. You see this issue pop up from time to time on these boards. Post a pic of your steering geometry so we can tell you for sure. Anything said without seeing a pic is pure speculation at this point, so i wouldn't change anything until you got one on here for somebody to take a look at.
Richard w 05-24-2008, 11:46 AM I will get a pic and figure out how to post them " any offer to post pic's" I hope but for a bit of history it is a 04 rubicon with a 6" Full Traction kit running 37" Irock Radials.

Jeepernick 05-24-2008, 01:49 PM I have been told drop pit man arms are bad news and not a good fix... they are like putting a bandaid on something that needs stitches
Knuckelhead 05-24-2008, 02:39 PM The dropped pitman arm is only needed if you drop the track bar mount at the frame...
Richard w 05-25-2008, 08:30 PM I think I figured the pic thing out.

Richard w 05-25-2008, 08:55 PM I looked into moving the draglink to the top of the arm at the knuckel but I would have to move the swaybar mount againe.

Jeepernick 05-25-2008, 09:15 PM ya shitty

Knuckelhead 05-26-2008, 04:55 AM I think you need to do something like this.

I would not recommend driving it on the road without the sway bar...IMO
Richard w 05-26-2008, 05:44 AM I am going to try the JKS bracket or just fab one up myself.
I have driven it with out the swaybar but using it as a daily driver it sucks.
I would remove the Track bar drop bracket I installed for the 6" FT kit but I had to drill out the tapper on the OE mount.
If worst comes to worst I will remove the drop bracket and use a large Heims joint at that end and find a stock Pitman arm.
But from the instruction provided with the knuckel the drag link is almost a perfect angel.
Does anyone have a stock TJ Pitman arm lying around they want to off?
Thanks Jeepernick for the time on the phone yesterday.
I will post updated pic's after I have made the mods.

Richard w 05-26-2008, 05:46 AM One more thing has anyone seen a write up on tapping the 2004 TJ Mercedes Steering box for Hydrolic assist?

Richard w 05-26-2008, 05:55 AM Would it be better if the track bar reached further twords the passinger side like in SHNIPE post or is it not nessary?

Yes, but you need to clear the drag link...
tommaho 05-26-2008, 07:56 AM ... I know have a lot of bump steer at speeds over 45mph ...
Are you talking about bumpsteer and not wobble? You'll definitely have bumpsteer with your TB / drag link angles, but if you also have wobble you'll probably also want to go through the death wobble checklist of joints, bushings, tire balance, etc. etc. Just because you didn't have it before doesn't mean it wont pop up now that you've changed something in the system
Have someone rock the wheel back and forth while you watch the bushing and joint at the ends of your track bar - look for movement. If thats not it, move on to the rest of the potential sources. With some luck, the wobble will be one issue, then you can tackle the angles and actual bumpsteer separately.

[edit] I guess the OP has probably figured that out by now. :shaking:

I would ask these kind of questions in the Cherokee threads or at least start a new thread in the non hardcore.... but the number of people that have done it and the number of people reading this thread isnt going to weigh out
