what is this? it is from a ford 9", it's 28 spline, it was in my friend's 72 bronco when he baught it, but so was a 460, so chances are it isnt stock. he thaught it was a detroit, but i dont know what a detroit looks like for a 9". i fugured you guys would know. oh ya, and what is it worth if he were to sell it?
thanks
Jeff
brector 10-19-2001, 05:46 AM Looks like a spool to me. Not sure though.
wheelinjp 10-19-2001, 05:51 AM I want to say spool but the center isnt solid. My d60 spool doesnt have a hollow center and 9in. spools look the same Ive seen them. I think its a locker of some sort though. Sorry no help.So unless the thing has side gears that can be changed to 31 spline it is not high dollar to a 4x4 guy.

Aggro 10-19-2001, 07:33 AM Well I was hesitant to post for fear of giving misinformation but since you've got nothing but that so far, I will. It is NOT a spool. Could be a factory trac-loc or maybe a detriot. The pic doesn't show enough detail. Guaranted it is NOT a spool. as for worth... probably not much being 28 spline. My 35 spline detroit looks similar, but so do opens and lsd's!! Open it up and see what's in it- that'll tell you for sure!

This is exactly what I was gonna say! its a detrot or trac lok, not sure which but if you have some axle shafts its not to hard to check. And being its 28 spline I wouldnt say its worth muhc but to someone with a near stock truck
The Rockslut 10-19-2001, 08:27 AM It is NOT a spool! It isnt a open diff either. I would say Detroit
XJJack 10-19-2001, 10:40 AM It's a carryer, you bolt the ring gear to it.... LKocks like a trak lok to me
broncoboy 10-19-2001, 11:15 AM there is no way thats even close to a spool. come on guys. a spool has much less meat in the middle. and you can see from the pic through the little veiw hole there is a good size spring in between both axle holes. i would put my money on it being a detroit. the tracklocks didnt look like that. they dont taper down, they are considerably larger in the middle. im guessing detroit. ive had both in my nine. the 31 sp spool is the way to go. i ran mine with 36s and never had a problem. its funny cause alot of people are swaping to 35 sp. even when they dont break the 31s. slap it in there and turn in a circle, if it makes a ratchetig sound then its a detroit. if not, its either broken or maybe a trac lock.
good luck
pat
LC Hamma 10-19-2001, 12:31 PM It's definately nota spool or tracloc,
it's an early model Detroit.
Danger Ranger 10-19-2001, 12:36 PM That's a Detroit Locker
DR
AxlesUp 10-19-2001, 12:36 PM guysa thats a 9 inch carrier... look inside that hole, if it has square blocks of steel inbetween the spider gears its a trac-loc, if it has anything else in there its a locker of somekind...
if have a trac lock laying under my bronco along with a full spool that im putting in if anyone wants a pic.. geocities wont let me post um....
peace

Jeffh555 10-19-2001, 02:40 PM thanks, i thaught it was a detroit, but i wasnt sure. it's for sale, if anyone wants it, but you guys are too smart to dump $$$ into a 28sp 9", the detroit is off to e-bay, along with my D35c ARB.
