So I am in the middle of doing spring over on my zuk and have run into an issue of gearing for the size tire I am running. I have a set of the 33"'s and I know the 1.3 squirrels in there isnt going to pull it with out doing some gearing change. I could have sworn that I read something about using 3rd's from other vehicles to do the job. If not, I am in the market for T-case gears because ultimately I am going to toys and dont want to put to much money into the zuk axles. I am a poor college student so any ideas that are effective and cheap are appreciated:smokin:.

Yes'm .. they're kinda weak though but they're all over the GD place, so the price is good.

So, let me get this straight. All I need to do is find an XL7 and get the ring and pinion gears out and put them in the sammi carrier. I used the gear calculator on Izook, and it looks like I will need the 5.12's to run 33's. For those of you with experience, can you tell me if that sounds right and also let me know if the diff gears swap is that simple.:smokin:

I think you may need the whole 3rd member. Not absolutely sure though. I remember a buddy was going to do it and it ended up being more work than worth for him cause he didn't need the gears very bad. I would try calling trail tough or another company that knows their stuff.

stock axle gears and lower t case gears are capable of turning 33's. i run mine with 33's and 4.16:1 t case gears and it does pretty good. i didn't swap axle gears because it would be a waste of money since i'm swapping to yota's hopefully within 2 weeks. just a little food for thought.

You can swap trackick front gears into a samurai a couple of different ways.....
if you use the complete tracker front third, you can just bolt it into the front samurai axle housing, no modding necessary.
If you use just the tracker front ring and pinion gears, you can swap them over to the samurai carrier, then put the samurai carrier back into the samurai third, then bolt it back into the samurai axle housing (front or rear axle will work this way).
For a tracker front third to work in the rear of a samurai, you will need to swap the 26 spline samurai sidegears from the samurai carrier, over to the tracker carrier (replacing the 22 spline sidegears). Also note, later year trackers use 26 spline sidegears in the front third (therefore the complete will bolt into the samurai rear axle, without modding)....but these are usually hard to come by, and generally cost more $$$.
Tracker rear thirds will not work in a samurai (physically too big).....so don't attempt it.
Also the pinion flange on the tracker thirds have the "large" bolt pattern....so to fit the 86-88 samurais, you will need to drill the "small" bolt pattern into the flange. It is very easy to do....just use the end of the samurai driveshaft as a template for drilling...the driveshaft has a ring in the center that will center the driveshaft end up on the flange, so you can drill the flange. If you happen to have an 88.5-95 samurai, then it has the "large" pattern driveshafts, so no tracker pinion flange redrilling is necessary.
If you are looking for some tracker front thirds, PM me. I currently have some available....in both a 4.62 and 5.12 ratios.

Personally i wouldnt mess with the r.p's like you said youre goin to end up with toy's anyway.I believe the trial gear 6.5:1 t-case set will lower youre 2wd ratio also.So you get youre lower gears for wheelin and youre lower gears for driving around, and still maintane a stronger r.p. setup.I know a few guys who have gone 5:12's and have had r.p. failure the pinion is to damn small.Just my .02 of advice.
