: F250 ZF 6speed grinding noise @ 800 RPM???
elf_cruiser 06-20-2002, 08:57 AM Just got a (new to me) 99 F-250 Powerjoke with the Borg-Warner 6 speed manual. It's 2wd xtd cab, long bed. The engine is sweet, runs and drives great. BUT- the tranny makes an odd grinding noise at about 800 rpm. It only does it at 800 rpm, then it's gone. It does it in all gears, but 1st is the loudest, then they get sequetially quieter, and in 5th you can barely hear it. The tranny shifts smooth and easy, so i don't know if it's a synchro going out or what, but it feels great. No vibrations, either. Also, anyone know where i can find the gear ratios for the tranny, i am just curious?
Any info appreciated...
Edit: The truck has 86k miles on it, and i don't know if the tranny fluid has ever been changed.
Flatty 06-20-2002, 12:06 PM I have the same problem in my 91 F250 Diesel with the 5 speed manual. It has a souind like a loose bearing, but only up until 2000 RPM is all gears, and only when I am on it. I tore the whole thing apart, including t-case, and no love. I found nothing wrong with it at all. It is really pissing me off, but it still drives and towes like a beast.

elf_cruiser 06-20-2002, 01:27 PM Flatty - How many miles are on your rig?? Hopefully this will not be a real mechanical problem like you are saying. Honestly, with the stereo up i can't hear it at all. It's just that i am new to the Ford, and don't want to screw anything up by driving it.
thanks!
Flatty 06-20-2002, 01:56 PM 150K on a diesel

66CJdean 06-20-2002, 09:19 PM This isn't the noise it make at low RPM's. On diesel's they rattle all the gears that arn't in use at low RPM's and really bad in reverse but its' normal. It called Gear Roll-up. I don't know if this is the problem you are talking about.
elf_cruiser 06-20-2002, 09:35 PM CJDean - This sounds exactly like what mine does. So it is normal, then?? That is a relief, sorry for the newbie question, but i have never owned a diesel. Thanks, man
NOODLES 06-22-2002, 10:15 AM It might just be the motor pinging because there is not much torque in a gas motor at 800 rpm. Also the older zf 5 sp does the same thing it seems. good trans though.
offroadr35 06-22-2002, 12:35 PM i'm pretty sure i know exactly what you're talking about and mine does the same thing, it's definitely completely normal. mine's an 02 with 5k on it. I test drove a bunch of them and they were all the same. Don't worry about it, enjoy the truck!!

offroadr35 06-22-2002, 12:36 PM oh, also for gear ratios and any other info go to www.ford-diesel.com

elf_cruiser 06-22-2002, 06:40 PM noodles, i have a diesel...
Offroadr35 - thanx for the re-assurance, i am enjoying it very much!
NOODLES 06-23-2002, 07:42 PM Ahh missed the power joke:D sorry
800rpm? of course it will rattle some
MikeW 06-29-2002, 06:48 PM wait a minute I thought borg warner makes T-cases not
transmissions, but the 6 speed is a Allison only available
with the diesel, and the 5 speed is a ZF (German company I think)
