85TrailToy 06-20-2002, 11:05 AM Well sorta... almost.:flipoff2:

Travis Waldher 06-20-2002, 11:09 AM Is that a tow truck?
ok.. I might be nuts.. but I would ahve taken both rigs off the trailer, used them to winch the trailer back on road, fix trailer and continue on.

no shit    wtf is wrong with some people:question:
Erich In AZ 06-20-2002, 11:23 AM Maybe he was just a AAA member taking advantage of the towing plan?
Seems like unloading those jeeps would have been the way to go. Now using them to winch the trailer back on the road would be a little tough, after all, they are jeeps..........
:flipoff2:
J/K
:ducking:

You have to realize how steep everything is at Tellico. It doesn't look so bad in the pic but there isn't much keeping that trailer from disappearing. There are many places along the gravel road that if you went over you would go a LONG way down. Unless you got lucky and hit a big tree. (A guy in a full-size Bronco got so lucky the day before!) I'm not sure what the tow truck up front is thinking?? I think the trailer was ok but the 5th wheel in the pickup was fawked.
Travis Waldher 06-20-2002, 12:20 PM ok.. look at the pic. The trailer is over about 45 degrees. Not really that far. The bank would stop any further downward travel. As in.. The trailer ain't going anywhere... its probably even high-centered on the axles.
I would have unloaded the Jeeps, and got my trailer out and fixed. That is... as long as the 5th wheel wasn't fawked up too bad. Then your kinda screwed. hehe

Weeds on the side there are about 3 foot tall, so the ground is NOT where you think it is there...
Depdog 06-20-2002, 12:30 PM DRM is right. The weeds are tall and you cant see whats past them. Most of those roads/trails have some NASTY steep drop offs and I doubt you would unload the jeeps without destroying them. Unstrap them and off they would go.
Depdog:usa:
Travis Waldher 06-20-2002, 12:43 PM *sigh*
I dunno.. so they are 3' tall... in that spot tha means that the ground for the most part is level. Looking at the brush and trees.. it appears, at least in that spot it doesn't drop off any time soon. I mean... the tow truck pulled up next to the tow rig. So.. you know it doesn't drop off right there.
Still.... I'm a wheeler... I have gotten in to hairier situations (read life threatening) than that and got back out. a little enginuity would have gotten both rigs off the trailer unharmed. Probably in less time it takes to get a tow truck out there.
Eskimo 06-20-2002, 12:49 PM 45*? that's a conservative number. Believe it... the right side of that trailer was in the air, nowhere near the ground.
That pic doesn't do it justice really.
Bahhh, forget unloading them, back the rear jeep up to the edge of the trailer, then crank it hard towards the road and drive over the trailer...

This has to be one of the stupidest comments I have seen from you seabass
1. This is a PAST TENSE event... DO you expect him to recreate it?
2. If a picture will not do it justice, then what the hell do you expect a second PICTURE to show you?
:shaking:
Harvester of Sorrow 06-20-2002, 03:42 PM  I think that after I wiped the shit off of my ass from being scared, I would have backed that last J**p off of my pretty little trailer and drug the ass end around.
You would not have to worry about the trailer falling any further as the weight would have been brought closer to the fulcrum...HITCH.
Besides that J**P looks like it could back off the edge of the trailer on the roadside...
  ...or he could have waited for an INTERNATIONAL to come by and tug him to safety!!
BWAHHHAHAHAHAHAH:flipoff2:

Yes please travle back in time...that's what I ment:rolleyes: ...to just you...I think the others understood, I ment if it was so steep, he would have takin a pic showing that, thus no
JeepinIan 06-20-2002, 03:46 PM The spot that trailer is in is the same type of place. There is no ground under the right side of the trailer. If one of the Jeeps on the back were moved, it could push the trailer over the edge.
Last time I was at Tellico; there was some diptick that was coming up 1 and ran off the edge of the cliff and was hanging on by just the diffs. It took 2 winches to pull the truck sideways from the edge of the cliff.
And yes, it is a loooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggg way down.
A new crew of web towers:rolleyes:
RCCA obsticles don't even look that wicked in some pics, but you know they are.

That is better, too bad he didn't take a good pic of the spot, because it rteally does not look to bad at all. but I wasn't there....if I was I woul;d have got a better pic with my crappy camera it would have looked like he was still moving too:flipoff2:
Travis Waldher 06-20-2002, 04:00 PM ok.. went back and stared at that pic more. Yeah.. looks like at least a 3' ledge it fell off. its REALLY hard to tell though with the foliage.
of course.. as its sitting there not really going anywhere... I can think of at least 2 ways to stabalize the load, and maybe even right it if the 5th wheel wasn't fubared. Without aid.
kwrangln 06-20-2002, 04:34 PM I know a landcruiser guy who rolled 3.5 times down in Tellico in 95 or so cause some asshole came barreling down the gravel road just like that one too fast. Buddie swerved to avoid the head on and hit the edge of the road goin pretty slow, few hundred feet down the hill he got stopped by a tree. If I remember right, took like 4 winches to get the rig back on the road. The road shoulders down there aint no joke.
A club member rolled his brand new Nissan quad cab daily driver during Dixie Run last fall....
The edge of trail one can be a doosie
GOFER 06-20-2002, 05:36 PM [
I dunno dude trail 1 always takes its toll during just about every large event and in between hell I have even done a swerve my self a time or two.
The drop off it usually about straight down, maybe he could have gottem everything off but better safe than sorry.
You lose it backing vehicles off there and it's total city unless you hit a tree to stop you even then your AFU.
Perhaps some trickery might have avoided the tow truck.
Just looking at the pic ifin they could have hooked the winches from the Jeeps forward an to the other side of the road seems like they could have just pulled it out?
but hell I dunno pics are tricky to read sometime and I do know for a fact that it's a long way down :)
85TrailToy 06-20-2002, 06:43 PM Damn! If I knew it would get this kind of attention I would have jumped out and took a bunch of pics.:D As it was I didn't think I needed to make their day worse by standing around taking pics.
A few of our guys came across them a few minutes before me. They offered to help winch it up but were given the 'I need to make a living' speech by the tow truck driver. They were waiting for a second tow truck at the time.
Using one of the Jeeps winches to anchor to something across the road is something I didn't think of. Might have worked but I don't know if there was anything close enough.
Travis Waldher 06-20-2002, 09:29 PM That was my exact thought when I said I had an idea or two.
Tie the two jeeps off with winches about 70 degrees toward teh front... nearly perpendicular to the jeep to avoid sliding down any further. Then take 3-4 straps or a couple GOOD pieces of HEAVY chain, chain the trailer off to the truck. Have the truck pull forward, if traction wasn't there, have another rig help the truck pull forward.
Really.. all those 10,000lb rathchet straps are holding anyway is teh trailer to the jeeps since the trailer is lighter.
But.. pics can play tricks on your eyes.. and there was probably flaws in my idea.

Umm, because I didn't take the picture, and the guy who did is :rainbow: ?? (Just messing with ya Frank)
As has been said.. The only obstacle on trail 1 is how to get back on it if you go off..
