: homebrew sye?
Fullreversal 06-20-2002, 12:09 PM has anyone built their own sye kit for np231's? I am poor as hell and have the skills to make one, but just exactly how to go about it? im thinking along the lines of a whack and tap like RE. What parts from the RE kit are available off the shelf from somewhere? Do they make their own CV flanges? any help is appreciated :)
chadl 06-20-2002, 12:59 PM The only cheap way I know of would be to tap the end of the shaft, drill a hole through the yoke, and bolt it to the shaft, no more slip yoke, of course it's not any shorter. The hard part of doing that yourself is you need to replace the tail housing with a shorter one, maybe another NV case? I don't know. maybe you could just order the shorter housing from a sye supplier without the rest of the kit for cheap

Fullreversal 06-20-2002, 04:17 PM yeah i was thinking about that, but i will need the yoke to be able to accept a CV shaft. Driveline length is not of concern for me because I have an s-10.
Travis Waldher 06-20-2002, 04:45 PM Find someone that SYE'd their TJ's NP231.
It is not getting rid of the slip-yoke. but the if you do have to yank the rear driveline the fluid won't comeout the back since the splines are all 100% outside the case.
You'd just have to swap out the tail cone and output shaft.
kwrangln 06-20-2002, 05:57 PM Helped a friend install one of the earliest RE hack and tap SYE kits, and know that the earliest versions had what looked like a pinion yoke (dont know what application) that had a washer tack welded in it to provide a bolting surface to attach it to the output shaft. The only custom part of the kit was the bearing retainer/seal housing which was a hunk of aluminum bored to fit the bearing/seal. It should be fairly easily reproduced, will just take some research to find what yoke to use for a cv, and tack a washer in it the same way. Dig into the spicer books, I know that JB conversions (he used to work for new venture/new process) uses mostly stock parts for its conversion kits, its just knowing the part numbers to apply. Its a doable project with some book time.
Kwrangln.
If it helps, when I get home in a couple weeks I'll check my records to see what bearing/seal part numbers currie uses in their kits so you can check measurements.

Those are called companion flanges, should be able to order one from a Spicer dealer...
Hack the shaft, drill it, tap it, bolt on the flange... That's the $100 RE kit...

Jeepmangled87 06-20-2002, 07:02 PM The Rubicon kit is fawking $100 bucks, your in the wrong sport if you cant afford that.:flipoff2:
Fullreversal 06-20-2002, 07:34 PM im definitely in the right sport, but when you 've been in school the last 2 and a half years, and not working, its hard to come across the cash for one. even 100 bucks is a crap load. Now when I get out of school....... its going to be a different story...:) :flipoff2:
CheapXJ 06-20-2002, 11:56 PM i used to have an 86 XJ with an NP 229 TC. (it's in the graveyard, I KILLED IT!!!!!)
*stupid newbie mode on*
i have NO idea if this will really work, but...
i was thinkin about taking the tailhousing and yoke off of that (they had no slip yoke) pullin the driveshaft as well, drillin and tapping my 242 and bolting the 229's yoke on the 242.
of course, there will probably be much more work involved, and it probably will end up not working, but if it does, i'll have a free sye. won't be able to use a double cardan shaft with it, unless i swap the yoke for a companion flange (front ones don't fit, but i wanna check out the ones from an 86 np207 front output, it's another shot)
if it works on a 242, ther should be no reason why it wouldn't work on a 231.
*stupid newbie mode off*

But if you already own a drill bit and a tap, you're paying $100 for a Spicer companion flange that probably runs about $20...

Exactly. :)
Now while we are still on the subject... whats the output shaft size for the NP231? I'm guessing about an inch and a quarter? 27 spline?
