: What about Atlas gears make them any stronger than d300 gears?

I don't have a pic of my d300 gears from when I had it open to share, but looking at this pic of an open Atlas II I can tell you that the two gears sets, aside from the number of teeth on them, look exactly alike.

Now, I can see how the Atlas gears might be stronger if they were made out of some higher quality metal, which I know nothing about. That's the question, really. Are they? What makes them so special?

Keep in mind, I care nothing about any other part of the t-case for now. I don't want to hear people who plunked down the cash for an Atlas say, "I got it because of the 32-spline output and the lower gearing. I didn't even care about the strength! " I understand that reasoning. I'm just trying to understand the gears.

If a 300 has straight cut gears (sorry I'm not sure)
Wouldn't the surface area or contact area be greater with a helical cut gear (Atlas)?

Are not the atlas gears bigger od.

There is a pic in the catalog or the Atlas specific catalog which shows the center Atlas Gear out and standing next to a D300 one. It is about a 1/3 larger than the 300. Can't find the pic online though...

About the tooth count:

Doesn't it work the same way as axle shafts??

25spl vs. 35spl???? we all know which is better....don't we???

with gears it is even more dramatic than with axle shafts, because with an eleven tooth gear the whole load is taken by one tooth, but with a 14 tooth gear it is always shared by at least 3 teeth. That is for straight cut gears by memory. Helical gears share the load between teeth better, but the principle is the same. 30% larger diameter and 30% wider probably adds to 100+% stronger

so that is an 3.8 or 4.3 atlas vs a 2.6 300 ?
Are tera 4.0 any better than stock 300? I thought teras had wider teeth than stock 300?

Wow, I'm convinced. Now how about paying someone to heat-treat/cryo-freeze my stock d300 gears?

PS: The pic I posted was a 4.3.

Gordon's got it. My Atlas book says 30% larger and 30% wider.

Most 300 gears that I've seen broke has when the case spread or broke. And lots of broken output shafts. And I'd hate to say it but very few stock gear sets broke vs tons of Tera gears busted.
Not a problem with the Atlas.

I think of an Atlas as gears that will last, but really I feel better about spending that much $$$$ because of the syncro shift and seperate front/rear shifters. Makes doing the impossible, possible.

see ya,
