Mike,
Check the other posts - theres gonna be a bunch up folks up for a workday. I'll be with a group heading in early Saturday.

P.S. We met last Friday night at gas station in Rancho. Your rig looked pretty well built, but I seriously recommend you install a front driveshaft before taking it on the trail:D

Yes. We will have about 5 rigs camping up at Fordyce lake Friday night. Were meeting up with another group and headed into the trail 9am Sat morning to go do some work on a big mud hole around WH5. Come find us and lend a helping hand.

How much forward did you move your axle? I have spare that may fit, sami flange t-case to yota flange pinion with 1310s.
edit: I'm looking for stock t-case. If you still have the one listed for sale, maybe we can work out a trade.

Seriously, we look to have a pretty good turn out with two Adopt-a-Trail clubs and some other individuals coming up. This weekend was thrown together pretty quickly so unfortunately we aren't going to have the workday standard of coffee and donuts in the morning, etc. It's just show up and work on the trail and for that I thank all the people that are planning on being there. We'll do better in the ammenities department next year. Looks like we will be having a little meeting at about 9am at Fordyce Lake and then head out onto the trail. Scheduled projects for Saturday are cleaning out the creek crossing on the way to Winch hill #3 and filling in the potential mud hole right before Winch hill #5. On Sunday we will be taking some Forest Service people down to the bog at mile 6.25 to scout the area for a possible reroute and/or trying to come up with a fix for the existing trail.

Here is a picture of the area before WH #3 that needs to be cleaned out. The trail is just beyond view in the background. All that stuff backs up the water at this point and creates a lake there.

I don't have a picture of the WH #5 area. Just a developing hole that needs filling.

Weather looks to be mid 60's with a few clouds and hardly any chance of rain. Perfect!

See you all there.

Sorry, still had the swap meet jones in my head...... http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=611856
Bret, there'll be 6-8 rigs heading up from the bottom at 8:30, setting up camp somewhere, continue to Meadow and return, then back out Sunday. Planning on hooking up with work parties to lend a hand. Will a particular CB channel be monitored? We'll have several "strong back-weak mind" types at your disposal.

What a weekend! I am again amazed at how volunteer labor gets the job done even with a no frills/no perks workday like this one. We had representatives from Four Dice, Webilt, the Pirates and some independant people too. Aside from the work areas the trail was in prime wheeling shape and getting out there in the rig was a bonus in addition to the good feeling of contributing to keeping our trail open. One thing that became apparent to me right off the bat though is that the difficultly of the Fordyce trail must be taken into consideration when planning work. It proved to be a challenge to get some of the rigs to the work areas!

A huge thanks to Jacquelyne Theisen (Bebe) and her two Hummer driving friends for a very generous donation to the FOF. I don't have their names with me right now and I will edit and add them later.

Here's a brief list of what we accomplished:

Stream crossing below Winch Hill #3. The stream is completly cleaned out of debris. All bypasses are blocked. The climb out that was getting dug out now has a great log and rock ramp.

Developing mud hole area below Winch Hill #5. Creek crossing water flow relieved so the water is less likely to back up onto the trail. More work needs to be done. Dug out exit to the section now has the beginnings of rock hardening. More work needs to be done.

We took Joe Chavez (FS) and a new LEO in on Sunday. Immeadiately Joe told us he would like to reroute the trail down to the committee crossing! A large part of the initial decent is a dirt surface and heads straight downhill. This is a bad configuration for errosion potential. Joe is very open to cutting new sections of trail if it is a more sustainable route. He even considers the challenge potential when looking at a possible path. When accomplished, this reroute will ADD trail length and features. Amazing! Adding trail!

Joe and Kurt (LEO) talked to almost ever trail user on the way down to the mud hole at mile 6.25. Some was public relations and some was "education" on proper trail behavior. No citations were issued although a few warnings were.

When we got to the mud hole area we decided it was not going to be an easy fix. Any work on the hole itself would not do anything for the fact that the whole trail at that point it depressed and getting worse so we scouted a reroute approximately 1/2 mile long that moves the trail up on the hillside and onto a stable area. This reroute ADDS trail (there's that amazing concept again) and adds several rock crawl features to the trail as well. If approved by the geologist, hydrologist, etc. we can start work on it as the seasons permit. Joe thinks there is an excellent chance since the new route is sustainable and the existing is not.

Winter weather will be coming soon so we will probably not being doing any more work this year but we will be planning for next year including arranging for some perks like a BBQ for the work crews.:smokin:

Joe and I talked about dispersed camping and I was telling him about the approach that has been taken on the Rubicon. Joe wants to keep the sustainable dispersed areas and even allow driving to the campsites in them. None of this one rig length stuff on Fordyce hopefully. His idea is to keep the areas and require a simple "camping permit" that would be free and something like a fire permit that is now issued for camp fires.

This was a very productive weekend both for work done and planning. Joe Chavez is a great guy and it really looks like he wants to work with the 4 wheelers to keep and even add trail. He wanted me to mention to you all that we need your comments during route designation in the TNF.

Thanks to everyone that came out.

What were the issues they had to warn people about?

One rig contained three people and only two seats. There was a lot of general letting people know about drinking and driving, particularly those that were hanging out drinking and not in a set up camp. One guy was also cautioned about the legal manor of discharging a firearm after a huge "BOOM" sounded as we were standing pretty near.

Jacquelyne's two friends that contributed to the donation to the FOF are Lyn Carstens and Sean Seward. All three drive Hummers.

Great job Bret and Jeff! It was probably our group that made the loudest impression. One of our guys young son wanted to hear daddy's deer rifle, so they walked 500 feet from camp and fired two rounds. It was determined that it was discharged legally and safely, and we all got the drinking and driving speech at our camp. That said, we are also actively involved in preserving the responsible use of our trails, appreciate the efforts of you and others toward the same goal, and regret any detraction from your ride along our encounter may have caused. Perception is everything..........
