custom built who does it?

US Army does (at least, they did) <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
You can still find these for decent $ in the papers. They make an awesome trailer for the trail. I've had mine over some pretty tough trails.

I've been looking for the M416s (or M100s)in my area and I can't find one for reasonable money.

So I may be building my own version (sure would like it to be 5 x 5.5" so I can use a spare).

Custom built? Wayne Percival down the highway in Dixon makes them.

Can't afford one (they are sweet though), so I'll have to build it.

Anyone have any pics of the pivoting pintle?

or the axle assembly....

I realize some will consider this cheesey (me asking for pics), but I seriously can not afford $1400 ( or more).

Kevin hows it going???? Love the sig line for you and the flying bronco it is to true. What are you going to tow the trailer with is the cheraco done? any of the dixon boys heading for the desert this year?

Charly: Don't take this personal but I would not feel right posting pic's of Waynes design. You could send him and he might just tell you. His e-mail is on the web page.

Well it's back the the <IMG SRC="smilies/beer.gif" border="0">

make you own. i got an old toyota pickup for $200, choped off the front end, bent the framrails in and welded it up. i spent more at the DMV than i did for parts. all i needed was a scrap peice of 2x2 and a peice of 3/8" plate for the hitch, and wire up the lights.

Back half of a CJ5 w/33's and a SOA.
The axle is the rear D44 with the pumpkin cut out and sleeved with a piece of tubing, front spindles and hubs bolted to the d44 flanges for a full floating axle with big bearings.

Picture was taken before the box was added - a 40x48 Military container for some sort of missle guidance system.

Total cost about $150

Pintle ring came from a trailer supply
Stationary tube is a piece of DOM I had laying around

The rotating inner piece is a chunk of solid stock that fits loosly in the DOM which I had the end threaded to hold the spring

I do not remember where the spring and nut came from

here is a pic. of my $200.00 trailer, with 33s(now has 35s on it), the tub is from a Chevy Luv stepside bed, minus the glass fenders,, and we built the frame from 2x2 box, built the axle from 2x2 1/4" and fabed on some Jeep Model 25 front axle spindles and hubs, using 1980 rear CJ-7 springs and hangers,, and I was able to find a military 360 degree pintal... if you can locate another stepside bed, (the shortbed version) we have another frame already built,, we could sell ya cheap ,also a friend built a trailer he has decided to sell,, sitting on 33s, also with a 360 pintal, same springs and axle, and resembles a Radio Flyer Wagon,, (kind of a flatbed with wooden stake sides,,

Here's my modified M416, sprung-over to match the height of the Cruiser. This is right after my wife and I finished the second stage of the project, since then I've added a couple more features and a few dents as well.

What do the M416 type trailers go for. Found someone that has one that is for sale but dont want to get completely ripped off? What is reasonable.

Around here (Co), I've seen 'em in the papers in nice shape for $5-700. I got mine for about the same. If you're going to use it on tough trails, I wouldn't be too concerned about body condition. I've put the fenders on mine through hell and back. I also flush mounted my tailights/reverse lights in the rear "tailgate" since I kept ripping those off too.

I have a friend up here that is just starting his 4x4 trailer sales. I've seen his prototype, very stout and basic and similar to the American Bantam trailer. Complete with 360 hitch 1k. I'll post his number if anyone is interested.

I was gonna do a thread on trailers a while back just to see what everyone was running. I too have a 1946 Bantam trailer. Mine is the civilian version with round fenders& a tailgate. I used Landcruiser springs & hangers & did a spring-over on it. Running 32-11:50's on it now. I am in the process of building an axle with Landcruiser front spindles & locking hubs. I also lengthened the tongue about 20"+ & put a pintle ring on it. Paid $350.00 for it years ago. Seen them go for $500.00 & up around here.
Look at these sites www.4X4TRAILERS.COM (http://www.4X4TRAILERS.COM)

The ones I've seen around here (old Forest Service units) have round fenders, some with tailgates (look like they were cut actually) and some without.

Someone told me these were M100s.

If the body is welded to the frame, fenders are round and the frame is pretty crude-looking, it's probably an MBT of WWII era. Worth *good money* to a military vehicle restorer if it's in good shape. the Korean-era M100 is similar, also round fenders and axle stubs that stick out further than the edge of the rims. These are fairly rare and tend to bring good money as well. Bantam civilians are similar to the M100 of the same era (also round fenders), but have a tailgate (no military trailer has them because one of the Army contract specifications was that they had to float with 500 lbs. of gear in them) and a regular ball hitch instead of the military lunnette. They're rare and sought after my people interested in historic Jeeps. The M416, the last of the military 1/4 ton trailers, can be distinguished by its squarish fenders. There were two sub-versions, the M416A1 has surge-actuated hydraulic brakes, and the M416B1 has smaller wheels because it was designed to be towed by the USMC M422 Mighty Mite instead of the M151 "Mutt" that towed the M416's. There's plenty of these on the market, but they're getting scarcer and the price has climbed in the last few years, since the military got rid of most of their stockpiles.

another vote for build your own. this cost about $300 with 15 gallon water supply and bulk propane, its on 31"s right now and uses a 2000 lb axle.

mine pulles straight and even though i made it with 14 gauge tread plate it still only weights 600 lbs dry. i suggest keeping the ball hitch if you plan on running it on the street, the images above are a great idea but will still allow the trailer to go all the way over. i have not ever exceeded the angles available from the ball hitch but i ususally leave the trailer in camp i guess it could be done. mine is a little longer than most at 9'6" but i wanted it to carry canoes in the summer and its on the short side for doing that.

I was planning on making my own as well. Question! What are you guys running for a tongue distance(trailer box to hitch point)? Interested in the home built ones, as well as, what the MIL Spec ones are.

Thanks! <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
