: What to build next... Toy or Sammy
Flatty 09-28-2001, 11:32 AM What would you guys say? UI can build a 83 Toy ( I already have the frame) or a Samurai? I kinda like the TOy idea, but a sammy is small and limber. I want to run 38's on this thing, but either way it will have a 1/4 ellip rear, and coils up front most likely. If I do the toyu, I will get a cab, and chop the back off. Go full tubes ion the rear with a 4.3, 420, dual case setup on some custom axles. The Sammy will be usinmg the stock motor, stock tranny, and lower case. Toy axles with 38's, 1/4 rear, coils font. What would you guys do?

Adam Ant 09-28-2001, 11:39 AM How about Another Flatty!! I have Complete Body!!!! heheheheh Stay True to you'r name
was Up! Bro
Adam,,,,,, Just A thought
artztoy 09-28-2001, 11:39 AM Fatkids' Sami is bitchin'... but you want to run 38's so I would go with a 'yota...
Also thinking....that 1.3L is REAL small for that tire size, and I wouldn't run the stock axles on it either. my .02 .... <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
Adam Ant 09-28-2001, 11:44 AM I want A 4 Runner With 60's

Gordon 09-28-2001, 12:34 PM I thought you were selling your flatty and building a daily driver. A built sammy is no better as a daily driver than a built flatty. I know it would be a little challenging to make doors and a top for the lengthened flatty tub but it would be doable. If you want something that is reasonable to drive to and from the trails and around town then go Toyota.
morpheus 09-28-2001, 12:35 PM since you wanna run 38's the toyota's gotta be the better choice.longer wheelbase too, i can't imagine wheeling a sami on 38's with that short of a wheelbase <IMG SRC="smilies/eyemouth.gif" border="0">
- jack
I think a sammy with a toyota drivetrain would be way bitchin! <IMG SRC="smilies/glasses.gif" border="0">
Flatty 09-28-2001, 12:44 PM Mind you this would not be a daily driver. I will take my time building it, and the only time I will drive it is when I go to the trail. I have the Ford for now. If I do the Sammy, I will stretch it to at least a 100" wheelbase, so that is not a problem, and I may even go with some scout 44's or something along thosae lines. Basically, I will have the same wheelbase in tyhe toy or the sammy. Now I just have to figure out what I would rather wheel. Hmmmmmm Auto with dual toy cases sounds good to me right about now. I can drink "soda" and smoke a ciggy and drive at the same time.
Dimitri
fatkid 09-28-2001, 01:45 PM If your going to stretch it go with the Toy, take advantage of the all the Toyota aftermarket parts. Not to mention the double stack, the double stack is enough reason alone to me.
Archie_G 09-28-2001, 02:05 PM How about building the Toy and ploping a Sammi body on top? That would look 'cooool'

Dimitri</STRONG>c'mon bro, i can smoke a ciggy and drink a soda, while crawlin around.....
id go toy!
Alfred 09-28-2001, 02:48 PM both are cool, but the sami will be easier on the budget...
4.16 transfer gears a like 400bucks, a lockright 175... you would also save on tires, as with the sam on 33" you´d get the angles/clearance than a toy w/ 35s
the 1,3 is ok... down here i am the only 1,3L engine that ever climbed a sand-dune that is called V8... go figure
... as i said, a toy would be cool, too ... and both have a real good aftermarket
fcfred 09-28-2001, 02:57 PM take your toy frame but make a sammy pick-up like that guy in the sammy section
run the 4.3, turbo 350, dual cases and yota axles coils front 1/4 eliptict rear
done
jai birds new rig, zuk p.u. 115" w.b.
in the sammy section or reo from http://www.nolimitoffroad.org/
Station 09-28-2001, 03:22 PM I'd build one of these. <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">

No actually, I would go with a Sammi on a custom frame(I know you have the skillz, and you are talking having coils and 1/4 ellip anyway. Save the trouble of making a stock frame work for you), then cut the fenders out like you have done with your Flatty(front and rear)and tube the fender edges because Sammi's look good that way. Push the tires out so you have 90*+ approach/departure angles. Then you end up with something that looks like this.

M.Martian 09-29-2001, 10:06 AM Either one should look and work great. If you want something that will catch a little more looks on the trail, I think the zuk would be the one to go with. Either cut out the fenders like the one that Station posted or cut off the back and make it into a pickup cab with a flat bed.
You might also want to talk to Poppycock over in the zuk section. He's building a hardtop on 38's with a 97 inch wheel base.

<IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
do it! <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce2.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0">
startin with the toy frame, I'd go hybrid and put whatever I wanted on it from there. something like Robin Hoods rig in the last TTC really has my attention... I like it simple like that not the fucking monkey bar disasters everyone is building in their garages right now..
Glenn 09-29-2001, 08:57 PM You already had a Toy and a Flatty... <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> Build a Sammy or a Scout... <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">
windows98 09-29-2001, 09:00 PM i would build a samurai if for no other reason then because ive never fooled around with one and the ones around here would be envious. lol or u could do the hybrid thing. that sounds like a great idea.
Hey Dimitri, I'll bet Becky would trade ya her Sami for your flatty
GRMhick 09-30-2001, 03:27 AM i say just decide on the drivetrain and crap, take what you have, and build the drivetrain, frame, etc. the way you want... mount up the tires.. then put a body around that..
MCFLY4X4 09-30-2001, 09:43 PM y again are you selling the flatty?
Flatty 09-30-2001, 10:05 PM Selling the flatty to pay for grad school.
As for what to build, I may have a line on an 83 toy for 1000. The thing was hit on the side at the bed, and bendt the frame a little in backk. The truck has a 4" lift, 35" BFG mudders... almost brand new, 4:88's, detroits front and rear, new tranny,... basically, I will have to throw some tubes on it, a dual case setup, some 38's, and I am ready to rock and roll
