anyone have any idea what these made power wise stock? its out of a truck. also, what would be the best power upgrade that would keep it reliable?

IIRC 210 HP and 300 LB/FT....

New performance heads and a manifold from edelbrock.

cam, intake, heads... BUT

Edelbrock's published HP/TQ numbers aren't that impressive for the money.

I figured on a cam and intake. How much do heads run? ALso, do I have to change anything with the TBI with these mods?

you can spend anywhere from 700-infinity on heads alone thats where the power is at so plan on spending some money...

What do you want this motor to do? Are you looking for increases in TQ or rpm and HP? As far as cam, are you running a computer? Intake, almost any good 4bbl intake with the adapter will be better than the TBI intake...even Edelbrock's TBI intake. The Edel is an improvement over the OEM TBI....but there are better intakes for the $.

If this is a TQ motor for lowend use vs. high rpm HP I would watch the parts you choose. For some TQ and HP gains the next step up would be a set of GM Vortech heads. They are truck heads so they do have limitations in valve lift (.460") and in rpm if equipped stock. If you're really just looking to bump the TQ #'s up, the TBI heads are actually OK if slightly cleaned up (ported...although I hate that word because some people think ported means to hog them out....LOL). I've heard they actually outflow the Vortech heads in the 200-300 valve lift ranges....after that the vortechs take over.

Cams? I would consider a roller. You can whip those valves open quickly, keep them open longer, then set them down vs. a flat tappet cam without having crazy long duration.......
..............but again, it depends on what you plan to do with it.

Vortec heads require extensive modification and in the end are not worth the money.

TBI heads are some of the worst GM castings ever made. If you want to make horsepower, you need to ditch them.

I took a stock TBI motor, bored it and stroked it to 383 CID, installed a comp xtreme fuel injection camshaft and Dart Iron Eagle cylinder heads. The bottom end has an Eagle rotating assembly with Keith Black pistons. DD2000 says 340 HP/440 ft lbs, which is plenty if you ask me.

This will be a trail engine only so im looking for simple but good mods. what intake should I be looking for as well as cam?

I agree on the TBI heads and HP...like I said depending on usage the TBI heads can actually be a decent head for low rpm TQ production ONLY. The TBI head has airflow velocity...not airflow quantity....and you already have them. Will it be an high rpm HP demon...Nope....but it will provide the needed TQ and rpm to about 4000rpm.....a trail engine.

I would not call an intake manifold swap and EGR plumbing extensive modifications. His original post mentioned a power upgrade that would keep it reliable.....from that I figured a complete rebuild, boring, stroking, and a large cam were not what he had in mind.

I used a set of 97 vortec truck heads, about $200 on ebay. Heads were in good and I just bolted them on. I also used a holley tbi to vortec intake, but a carbed intake witha TBI adapter would be much cheaper. Cam, can't remember, all of this was recommended by the guy that burned my chip. He said it would make around the 330 HP range and it definately felt like it. Go to www.tbichips.com .He helped me out a lot and seems pretty knowledgable on squezzing some power out of these TBI motors.

yeah I do not want to rebuild anything just get a little more power. The engine seems to be in good shape. Anyone no if these are normally 2 or 4 bolt?

for bottom end torque... 2 bolt/4 bolt is mostly just useless trivia... becomes more important with higher rpms...

A stock TBI won't handle much more than 250hp. If you get a stroker crank, high performance cam, headers, aluminum heads, etc, there is a lot of potential there. Our current 383 crate motors are getting close to 400 hp and 460 ft/lbs. of torque. You can stay with fuel injection, but you would want to upgrade to a 2" bore throttle body, which were found on TBI big blocks. From there you would also need a new chip of course.

Most likely a 2 bolt.

Some good info here: (ie the part regarding 4x4 guys and tow beasts under the "heads" section).
