I tried to search this but I’m a tard at searches. I want to put the trans I got out of a 97 wrangler into my 88. What kind of problems am I going to run into and how am I going to over come them? i have allready pulled both of the transmissions. I was told by a local 4x4 jeep shop that all i would have to do is put the older 88 bell housing on the newer ax-15 transmision and it would bolt right up, but that is not the case. the older bellhousing does not even come close to the newer trans.
the newer bell housing and trans will actually bolt right up to the 4.2 block but the end of the input shaft does not fit into the pilot bearing, and the hydraulic clutch assembly is different. I have the answer to the pilot bearing, I will just swap the pilot bearing off the 4.0 block onto the 4.2 block. Does any body know what to do about the clutch assembly.

Advanced Adapters makes a nice braided SS conversion line to use a newer (external slave) AX-15 with your stock '88 Master Cylinder . I did the same swap in mine and it was just the ticket . :D

Your '88 transfer case input shaft is smaller than AX15 output shaft, and has 21t. You will need to replace the transfer case's input gear with a 23t unit.
