If anyone has any advice on getting fuel to my TBI 350 using stock pump/sending unit, with custom made fuel cell I'd appreciate it. Or any other suggestions as far as after market fuel pump and tank setup. I will be stretching the rear about 6" pretty soon and will need some type of fuel cell eventually. Also pros/cons on a steel fuel cell? Thought about making my own with 16 gauge or 1/8" and cutting sending unit lock ring out of stock chevy tank and welding into my own contraption. I already have the stock TBI fuel lines.

Thanks for the help

Not sure if this will help you butI figured I'd throw it out there. I have a inline fuel pump on my tbi conversion on my CJ7. I have a stock fuel tank. The fuel pump is connected to the hard lines with high pressure fuel hose, then hose connects the pump to the stock hard line on the tb. I just cut it lines that come out of the tb with a pipe cutter, and then clamped the hose on the factory line (you could flare out the end too to hold the hose better).

Here is info on the fp: Fuel pump from Auto Zone Masters part # E2182 , we also purchased about 6' of 3/8" fuel line, and a fuel filter that would fit the line. Any filter should work that will accept 3/8" fuel line. Assemble it as shown in this picture.

The pump ran about $90 from AutoZone It is capable of hi pressure but the tbi only uses 15psi. I have my fuel pressure regulator is cranked up and I am running 305 injectors.

If you want to check up my writeup its at : http://www.bustedjeep.com/projects/junkyardtbi.asp

Otherwise I'm sure you can get a fuel pump that can be made to fit a fuel cell. If I needed the room I'd go with one behind the rear seat. A steel fuel cell should be fine if it is galvanized or protected from moisture somehow. I've seen some nice aluminum ones too.

My in-tank setup. The pump is hoseclampd to the return. Even with the return being that close to the pump inlet I doubt I'll get vapor lock. The motor is TPI, so I need high pressure.

I used an inline pump on the tbi conversion on my other rig, just put it close to the bottom level of the fuel tank and ran steel brake line to the motor, rubber fuel hose to the throttle body.

I just took out the chevy pump from my donor (89 blazer) and put it in my stock jeep sending unit setup. I cut and spliced on the chevy wiring end and it was easy as pie.

As for the tank, I used the stock sending unit from the jeep and just cut the hole for it in an RCI 2161 fuel cell. Used the stock lines all the way up to the quick connects on the frame rail. From there, just got AN fittings for both ends and connected them with standard fuel line. It works for me.

I ran the RCI 2161 on my old TBI engine as well; used e2000 fuel pump. I had AFI do my harness for me and I think they recommended the p5001 fuel pump.

Hit up the search engine with those keywords and you should find exactly what you are looking for.

Here are some pics of my set up. I am running an 89 TBI 350 out of a Blazer. I built my own custom fuel tank useing the factory in-tank pump and sending unit out of the Blazers factor fuel tank.

I made an access hole so that I can change the pump out without having to drop the tank.

I appreciate the help guys Iam still up in the air on my setup. Iam digging the cut out section behind the seat, I'll probably steal that idea but make my tank a little taller. If anyone has a measurement on the height of a stock chevy in tank sending unit and pump out of TBI blzer that would be a big help. Iam also wondering if anyone has any info on a liquid type sealer that you shake around to line the inside of a tank to ensure that the inside doesn't rust.

thanks ya'll

You can get some stuff to seal the tank from a bike shop. I bought some when I made a tank for a chopped and it worked good. Harley might have it as well

There is a TOTW on fuel tanks in one of the stickeys.

XJ tank and sink it into the floor. It will hold 20 gallons and give you an in-tank pump. Mount the filler to the roll cage.

I don't have any pics to show you but it worked very nicely.

The last tbi I was involved in was like someone else mentioned, we changed the tank out to a yj with electric pump and installed the donor pump right in its place.

I have also heard that a late 80's ford pick-up fuel pump is a good frame mount option?????

Lastly, I believe an 88-89 yj 4cyl TBI had a pump close enough that it would work as-is.

Pretty neat no gang banging, just tech in this thread.:smokin:

I have a CJ with a 5.3 in it, I used the stock Chevy in tank pump (2000 model). For the fuel tank I cut a section out of the top of the tank and welded in a piece that I could mount the new fuel pump to. I had to remove about 5" out of the bars/springs that hold the pump but it works well. Something else to think about is having a baffle, fuel injected engines die quick when starved for fuel. The nice thing about the pump I used is that it has its own baffle so it doesnt require you to add one to the tank. This is the only picture I can find right now and it is just of the pump after i cut it down.
