: Lo-Rev Tachometers
Brandon 06-21-2002, 12:46 PM I wrote to autometer for a referral on a custom made speedometer cable and the guy that replied to me asked about the need for lo-rev tachometers.
Personally I run a phantom tach that goes to 10k, I'll never exceed 6k so lo-rev to 6 or 7 would be nice - but not nice enough to pay extra for..
Anyway, he wanted to see how people felt about it so here is your chance to let autometer know what you want..
He did say if 20 or so people wanted them he could have them made but they would be retail plus $20 or so. Personally I can live with the higer numbers and a cheaper price..
I think there is a market there though..
Trick if you're running a V8:
Set the switch for a 4 banger and divide all the numbers by two... so if it says you're spinning 8k, you're really at 4k.
Brandon 06-21-2002, 01:05 PM what happens if you over - rev it? If mine goes to 10k, and I "half" it and hit 6k did I just kill my tach?
Dunno... I doubt it's ruined though. It's just counting electrical impulses... probably just pegs to the right until the revs drop.
The Jerk 06-21-2002, 01:08 PM that or your shift light sticks on and your really in for a blinding ngiht, lol, how low do you really need it to register though? my 8 g tach is sweet for my set up, maybe ill ge teh balsl to rev it to 6 one day , jiMMy
MattS 06-21-2002, 01:14 PM Don't most people just press the skinny pedal till the rev limiter kicks in anyway? That's what I do! :D
oldjeep 06-21-2002, 01:18 PM They already sell tachs like that. The selection is a little smaller, but I've got a 6K SUN tach mounted to my column.

desertoy 06-21-2002, 02:52 PM Diesel truck tachs go to 4k. That's probably a little low though.
Toyota_Jim 06-21-2002, 02:54 PM someone said v8's wont dotn like high revs? Friend has a built 360 in his powerwagon, I have seen it burried on 8 on quite a few occasions.

thats for them fancy newer cars
I just rely on good ol valve float.
A 6-7K tach would be very nice, I stop making power over 5700RPM.
but paying 20 bucks more, naa,
pcorssmit 06-21-2002, 04:00 PM My stock (from a ~'76 truck) goes to 5k. Prolly not as acurate as an aftermarket one though. I don't mind looking down and seeing that the speedo is all out of numbers, but its a little more worrysome when the tach does it. :D
Pete
MR4WD 06-21-2002, 04:16 PM My 454 can sustain 9200... but the valves float at 8400... I use an 8 grand tach... about 4 times (I think) I've hit the limit... Since it deals with electrical impulses, the tach doesn't seem to mind hitting the needle.

Good luck with a diesel tach. Most run off the alt or are cable driven.
Or does your diesel have spark plugs? :flipoff2:
