: I got a deal on d-44's for 100$
spencurai 06-21-2002, 01:06 PM i got a deal on some 44's for 100$ for a rock buggy that i am building up. give me some dreamer ideas for suspension stuff and maybe some tips and tricks on how to prep the 44's. i already want the 6:1 gears after running 4:16's for a while. tires will probably be 33x14 boogers:D other than that bring on the ideas and be creative.....:flipoff2:
okcrawler 06-21-2002, 01:18 PM NO BOOGERS :)
If you are going to do rock, resist. :D :D
What D44 are they (chevy, ford, waggy,.....)?
Cut, turn, shave..... sounds like a barber.. :)
Spencurai,
Get under a Land Rover Discovery. Check out the way it's sprung. One of these days I am going to try to duplicate it with full sized axles on the Samurai.
:flipoff2:

WHy??? I love my boggers!!! All i run is rocks!
How expensive do you want to go with your suspesion?
You like the coil idea? Maybe build something with some aerostar coils....
If you want bad ass go with some coil overs in the front, and then some rancho 44044's in the rear! Put some 37" boogers on it and call it good!!!
I have the 44044's on all 4 corners and love them, nice and soft and super flexy!!!!
Again the question.....What are the 44's from?
The 6:1 case is a very good idea though!!!
Rudezuk 06-21-2002, 01:27 PM Here is some flex!
spencurai 06-21-2002, 01:28 PM they are waggy axles and i talked the sucker down from 500$:D :D but i do have to pull them myself!!??:D talk to me about the discovery suspension?!? coils? bags? i know they have some kind of ride height modification on them?!? i know where there is a rolled on about 40' off the ground on an auto auction lot but that is kinda far up. i would have to examine it with binoculars. any links??
Rudezuk 06-21-2002, 01:43 PM I would trade that waggy front for a chevy front.....Chevy has a cast pad on top!
okcrawler 06-21-2002, 02:03 PM If you can handle cutting and turning, the Chevy is a much better way to go for the front. The Waggy spring pads are wider, that leaves the pig real far out. The waggy axles I've seen are only 1/4" wall tube. Full size chevy are 1/2" wall. No need for truss on that one. :D Anyway, you really need to turn the knuckles anyway for good pinion and steering angles. Put the feeler out, you may be able to come up with a housing cheap (I've got one behind my house, but it's in Oklahoma :p ). There is no magic to cut and turn. Just a cut-off saw, grinder, and some sweat! Oh, and don't forget the BFH . :D
The booger discussion is old. Search.....
Let's just say, you don't appriciate a TSL 'till you've had boogers.. ;)
{agreed, mud is a different story}
Oh - FYI, you got a great deal. The main thing on the front is complete outers! That's the key, the housing is the easy part. You can also get back to 5 - 5-1/2 easily with parts from those outers, if you want..
Rudezuk 06-21-2002, 02:16 PM Yes i didnt turn mine enough!
I turned mine 6*, and then i have a 4* shim in there......I could have used another 6*!!!
Try turning them 8-10*....depending on how tall you go...that will turn your pumpkin up so you dont have a crazy lower ujoint angle on you d-line....
Also F150 about a 78 hub and rotor assemble is about 30 bucks from Carquest!
I did the rear disk conversion and it worked out great.....88 IFS Front Chevy Rotors, the 1/2 ton light duty ones work great!
Convert the rear axles to 5.5 and then drill the rotors out to match lug pattern!
Also make sure you get a flat top nuckle for high cross over steering!
weezman1 06-21-2002, 02:32 PM While we're on the subject: I have scout D44's that i'm going to swap under mine here pretty soon and I'm still stuck on the outboarding of the springs. I know ya'll used waggy's and chevy D44's, but can you help me in my dept.?.
I'm going to run YJ's at all corners and would like to stretch the wheelbase to 90" or more and run a 35-37" tire.
I know i have to cut, turn the knuckles cuz the castor sucks on scout axles... I was thinking 9* give or take...
Pics would be cool too!
BTW: this is my first axle swap.
okcrawler 06-21-2002, 02:41 PM On a related note, if you are planning on doing much work on those axles I could post some pics and specs on the axle stands I made when I did mine. I threw these stands together in a few hours and they have saved me many times that in hours and back pain! :)
I've loaned these things out to so many people. Everyone loves them...
If you are interested, I'll snap some shots this weekend and post details....
For castor and pinion angle, figure in extra. Somehow we always seem to want to go bigger and taller, later.. :) I you are planning on that nast shackle reverse, go lots extra... ;)
weezman1 06-21-2002, 02:52 PM How much extra???
I'm prob going to start with a 36" tire and then down the road move to 38's or 39's, unless i get a killer deal...
Rudezuk 06-21-2002, 03:08 PM Go with 9-10*......Then put a shim in it to bring it even farther....make your final angle about 4-5*.....this will turn your pinion up enough and and you will still have a positive angle so you wont have tons of bump steer.
