Looks like Toyota is thinking of building a 4 door FJ. Pretty cool.

Looks like a dressed up 4runner to me. wish they'd do a removable top and solid axle guess they need the soccer mom sales though, instead of a real retro-style wheeling rig.

X2.
The rear door handle would be a PITA. Also for the rear gate. Always have to have 4 feet of clearance behind you.

and I quote from the builder:
"I wanted to make the FJ Runner a lot more masculine, a lot more mean. Something that would make the FJ Cruiser look like a sissy"
Nothing says masculine and mean like big rims and shiny paint:shaking:
I imagine that all the fab work to put an FJ front clip on a 4Runner body is complicated and time consuming (not disrespecting that) but where is the innovation behind putting an FJ clip on a 4Runner?

that is what happens you let an import car guy build an 'FJ cruiser'
it looks to me like a 4th gen runner with some FJ cruiser parts tacked onto it... rear door sucks and so does the double door handle thingy...
simple truck or SUV with diesel and SFA will sell, not soccer mom numbers, but it will sell and should be cheap to design and build...

All that time and money, and the POS STILL doesn't have a solid front axle. :shaking:  :shaking:
What's the point?

I think they did a pretty good job. As far as the idea goes, it was Toyota who went to them, not the other way around. There's a lot worse they coulda done when asked to make a "FJ Runner"

I thought it looked good in person. Much better than a 4runner.

I will have to say the new FJ is pretty cool--talked my mom into one and she just loves it...

did he just call my FJ a sissy?
X2 on the door handle... what a pain that would be.

Concept design teams need some more extreme @-holes to push the envelope rather than the "I put some polished billet here and there" folks. :D

Toyota couldn't find someone else to build a project vehicle? Totally fawkin gay. Total waste.

I think those that don't like it feel it should be a wheeler, while those that do like it (myself included) feel it is just a stylish SUV.
I like it, but I don't consider it a hard core offroad truck. It would easily replace my 4WD Tahoe or my Grand Cherokee as a daily driver, moderate tow rig and Baja/desert exploration vehicle.
Rockcrawling is not the only use for 4WD.

Rockcrawling is not the only use for 4WD.
Absolutely true. However, Toyota already has all of these light-duty IFS 4x4's:
RAV4
Highlander
4Runner
Tacoma
Tundra
Sequoia
Land Cruiser
RX350
GX470
LX470
The FJ Cruiser is the 4x4 they built to market towards the off-road crowd. It's the one they advertise heavily in the 4x4 magazines. It's the one they think competes against the Wrangler. But its 4x4 system and suspension are no different than their other light-duty 4x4's, and quite frankly under-built for the power and weight of the vehicle - especially when you factor trail use into its intended use. A 7.5" and 8" ring gear? Gimme a break! The diffs in my 80hp 2400lb Suzuki Sidekick are almost that big!
Sorry I'm so bitter; I just really wanted to like the FJ. But real-world off-road use has confirmed the vehicle's on-paper deficiencies. I'll be sticking to my solid-axle Toyotas until they can design a better setup than my 1985 4Runner.

Toyota does know how to manufacture real offroad vehicles. Welcome to America where we get nothin' but shit. Overseas, you can still get a solid axle cruiser that seats up to 11 with factory snorkel and winch along with a choice of petrol and diesel powerplants. Go to the toyota website and click on the webpages for australia and europe. They make a ton of shit most Americans have never seen or heard of.

Exactly my point.
Toyota wanted a vehicle they could market towards off-roaders. And we got the FJ instead.

The 4Runner is listed above so now I am real confused. I look at it as a 4Runner with a new clip, not a 4 door FJ Cruiser or LandCruiser.

My point is that Toyota currently has 11 4x4's for sale in America, but not one with a pair of solid axles.

How hard/expensive would it be for Toyota to bring a vehicle like that to the US? Crash and emissions standards are the biggest hurtles for federalization, but if they take that into consideration when designing the vehicle, their additional cost would be minimal and they would sell a zillion of them here!

I'm not a big fan of the grille and hoodscoop on that rig but full floating axles, snorkel, and steelies make that da cats ass in my book
Not to mention its a diesel rig too

Damn right.
I would go down to a Toyota dealership and buy a couple of those TODAY if they offered it here. But instead, I'm "preaching to the choir" by whining to the the Pirate board. :D

I would buy one of those today too if the bastards offered them in the usa. we get show "4x4s" done by import shops and the rest of the world gets the dependable, USEFUL vehicles like that.

one reason those other countries get those , is because most of there roads not paved , where we get posh highway ride they get rutted road , this IFS we get stuck with would not survive over there .

With regard to the LC70 you posted up its very cool, v8 turbo diesel but not the twin turbo v8 diesel the new 200 comes out with, but at the end of the day its a car that hasnt changed much since the 1980's the dash is the same, the body is basicly an early prado circa 1994 or round abouts. but hey I would buy one in a second if i could the last of the real offroaders now the LC is IFS. Hilux now ifs new nissan patrol rumor is IFS. we even got the 100 series cruiser with a solid front axle :D soon we will be like you guys except you will still have dodge, ford with a solid front end.

the hilux and the cruisers as well as the prados are ifs and sfa's are optional on the cruisers. the cruisers in the dakar rally as well as most other motor sports toyota is involved in use the ifs vehicles....we all know sfa are easier to repair and rock crawl w/but durability on rutted roads vs ifs is questionable. What the SFA do offer those who option for it is higher gross vehicle weight hence the 11 passenger variants. just wanted to clear that up ....

this thing is sweet! i would totally drive this to bed bath and beyond for some hardcore retro toaster shopping. and with wheels like that, who wouldn't wheel that over to starbucks?
