I am trying to adapt my turbo 400 to dana 300 t-case using factory adaptors and parts. Thus far I am running a np-208 cast iron adaptor with novak conversions 32 spline dana 300 input shaft. The problem lies in the trans output shaft, its too long. I am running a early 70’s AMC turbo 400. Is there a cheap way of shortening a factory shaft or do I need to find the short 4x4 (turbo 400 to 203) shaft to make this work? I know you can get the short 4x4 output shaft new but I want to do this as cheap as possible.

Anyone have any advice or experience with this?

Tim

I used a 4 1/2 angle grinder on mine....took my time, made it as square as i could...even put the small bevel back on the end of the shaft (with the grinder) i just shoved about 8 clean new shop rags in the tail housing around the shaft, used a shop vac as i pulled the rags out to try to get most of the shavings out. So far so good :-) I know of another guy that did this same thing, he's run his tranny for almost 3 years now, gets used about twice a month (weekend trips). His is still fine, no funny vibes that he can feel...nothing leaks...

i've never adapted the two, how much too long is the shaft? are you better off using a piece of plate in between the trans and adapter, or adapter and 300 to make up the difference?

Cut 1" off the 208 shaft and call it day!!!
I took the shaft out during a manual valve install and had it cut down by local machinist. (anyone with a lathe)
I've got 400/203/205 works great. search "project 127"

Just cut it, I did one with a grinder, and it is holding up fine so far. For sealing I would reccomend using a sealed input bearing and a double lip seal at the input to be sure to keep the ATF separate from the gear oil Sealed D300 Input Brng# SKF 6209 2rs, NSK 6209 ddu, NTN 6209 LLU, I can't find the # for the seal offhand, but it was posted somewhere here.
hope that helps.

Well I can't cut the output shaft on the AMC turbo 400 enough to make the t-case set up fit. I will first try to find a 208 or equivalent style output shaft and shorten it. If not I will see if a conversion company or GM sells them new unit that will suit me needs. Does anyone know offhand how many output shaft lengths GM offered on the turbo 400 trans.

Thanks for the help

Tim
