Just ordered my 44044's for the front and my D60's getting ready for the Detroit up front.
I'm pulling my frame off this weekend to do some welding and wanted to know if anyone can give me a measurement on how much to extend the frame for the 44044's.
I have planned to keep the shackle forward, unless someone can convince me other wise (Fleck)? If I do the RS how long should the towers be? I'd like to keep them as short as possible and I don't know anyone running the Waggy springs.
I know that this is going to be a trial and error process, but can someone get me close to where I need to start? Thanks
ol John Henry 06-21-2002, 08:37 PM Ya mind telling us what vehicle this is going on? SII, 800? Oh yeah and tire size… not that I would answer the question anyway:flipoff2:
harkinoff 06-21-2002, 08:46 PM ya what are you working on? pulling the frame off? bring it on, you sound tense!!!!!
'72 Scout II with Dana 60 / 14 bolt 4.56 gears detroit front and rear. I'd like to run 38's on 15"gotta go do some grinding...
I've been getting parts together for along time now, I've got the T-19 wide, D300, with a good 345 and fuel injection. I still may go with a carb, I hate being dependent on electronics and I hear the Holley is :barf:
:usa:
harkinoff 06-22-2002, 08:50 AM grinding the 60 isn't bad, hope you have a couple of hours, Thats what I did, on the frame I added 4" is all and moved the axles as far foward on the front and as far backward as the rear would go, have fun
Scout Dude 06-22-2002, 09:43 AM I don't know why all you people grind "for a couple hours" on a caliper to fit 15" wheels...Matt (rockslut) barely had to grind to fit 3.5" bs it took him about 15-20 minutes each.
BTW, 44044's are 24" and 22" long from center pin to mount with the overall lenght being 46". So decide which is going forward..account for extra if it is a SR and weld some mounts on.

can we say "offset" he must be wide!, I wish I didn't do that because I'm going to military hummer wheels.
JoshC 06-22-2002, 11:22 AM I just ordered 3" BS wheels and don't plan on doing any grinding at all.
Old Scout 06-22-2002, 11:52 AM No grinding for me!
I run a 17" set of these:
:D
harkinoff 06-22-2002, 12:01 PM not enough holes for me, besides you spent more on one wheel, than I can get a hole set of military hummer run flat bead locks for:flipoff2:

I spent 1200.00 and they came with 37x12.5x17 tires. The tires only had two Cal Rocs competitions on them. You don't loose much rubber in less than 20 miles!:flipoff2:

You need to make you your mind on what way your going to go! Are you going to twist your knuckles? How much castor do you want? You say you have a 60, what pitman/steering arms are you going to run? Is your 60 chebby or dodge?
I building with RS44044 right now. I'm going RS and moving the axle forward 1.5". The stock pitman arm is too dam long so with a 1.5 shorter one and real steering arms everything will line up.

well if you move the font end all the forward plus adding to the frame the long pitman will work, steering arms will be the same pattern chevy or dodge, if you do a high-steer crossover setup

Like the paint. I remember seing your rig in an earlier post but couldn't find it. I tried searching for " :rainbow: painted shit on Scouts". Any other ideas?
It's a GM dana 60. If I need to turn the knuckles I will, I think I'll get it together and see what castor I have. This Scout isn't going to be a trailer queen, so it need to be drivable.
It looks like a 4" frame extension should do the trick, thanks harkinoff
Who got the best steering arms? I was considering Avalanche Arms. The price seems pretty good and I'm idea rich and money poor.
Old Scout, how long are your front mounts going to be? Some of the RS conversions look like they are just waiting to catch a boulder.
Thanks, Mike
:usa:
RustoleumWhite 06-24-2002, 01:17 PM 4"?!?!? How much frame do you want to stick out????
Lets see: the 44044's are 47" eye to eye (flat), they are offset 2" (to 22.5 front, 24.5" rear)
Stock Scout springs are 43", centered, so the front of the spring is 21.5"... 1" difference.
I'd say leave the front mount were it is and run a longer shackle and be able to get away with it.
Unless you want to move the axle forward, then go from there.
I extended my frame 3", and RS, ended up only needing it about 1.5" longer, and the axle was moved forward about 1.5".
I suspect you will not really need to extent the frame much, depending on how much you want to stretch the wheel-base.
6" original extention:

New front towers, 3.5" x 3.5" x 1/4" tube:

Font towers, re-drilled for 44044's (original design for IH PU springs, 46", centered) So you can how much I could have moved them back. The frame is 3" extended here:

I've since trimed and beveled the front hanger since. Heres and "in progress" pic, I don't have a decent completed pics:

Mike, search the gen section, lots of different arms are discussed, I run Ben Arms. I've seen pics of the Avalanche arms twisted, I'd avoid them, look a little thin and weak, for a long arm.
I run a GW arm, works well with the Ben arms. Check out the post on the Pitman Arms in the Binder section.
