I finally finished my new rearend its a 40 spline reverse rotation ford 60 with 488 gears I thought id share incase someone else had thought about it. I made my axle housing the standard way , just like everyone else does but the catch is that the R.R. frod 60 never had a case split all the way up to 5:38 they used what was reffered to as a 3 series carrier. I wanted to run 40 spline shafts but no lockers are availible for the shafts so I had to run a spool, but only two companies make the spool and neither make the spool in a three series only 4 series carrier so I blanchard ground .165 off of the back side of the ring gear , and it works perfect.

That's way cool man. Did you chuck that ring gear up in a lathe or what? Let's see some pics of those shafts. Who made them?

I was curious what you ended up paying for on the axles. I have checked with several and they all hover around $400 for the pair. What did the bearings cost? Did you do a flanged axle with 6 on 5.5 and what bearing axle end did you use? I was told I need the big bearing or torino style ford. I have a strange 40 spline spool and am gathering parts for my rear axle.

yah yah yah, reverse cut or reverse rotation we all know what he means even if he isn't using the correct nomenclature.

Do you need special carrier bearings to be able to run the 40 spline axles?

the shaft were 495.00 for the pair and they are the 6 x 5 1/2 l.p. . the bearings were right at 100.00 they were timken 45mm . you are right that you will have to run the lg ford bearing cups. I beleive that the shafts will ahve to come from strange as well due to a special pitch that they may put on the shafts due to the spool be sure and check the mark willioams did.
