I have carried this CRKT for a long long time. So much so that it is so dull it won't cut paper any more. It is stupid metal and won't hold an edge at all so I'd like to replace it. Only thing is how picky I am about what fits in my pocket. I like how skinny it is so you can still fit your hand in your pocket. I need something equally skinny, lightweight, and tip down. Assisted opening is a plus. Any suggestions??

My crkt.

Spear Point 3.56" blade .10" thick, 4.63" closed, 3.7oz

I have tried gun and knife shows with no luck. I usually lean more towards benchmade knives when I think of a suitable replacement but never pull the trigger because of price. Most local stores don't carry a wide range of one knife manufacturer so you get the pick of the lot. I'd really like something new. :)

You can't sharpen your M16? Both of mine(z and t) are incredibly easy to throw an edge on to.

I have tried but I really suck at it. The one sided bit kills me. I don't believe I have the right stones for it. I've had others try and it always comes back looking like someone has been chewing on it.

What's the consensus on HK knives by benchmade? I think the glass breaker would get me in trouble.

Benchmade fags are almost as bad as HK fags. Good products but I wouldn't pay the name tax twice on that one.

I'm gonna search around locally today. I think my only goal for today is finding a new knife. :smokin:

Vex is a nice knife.
I always knocked BM knifes "Why spend that much on a knife".
Until I owned one. I am sold on their quality.

I have a couple as well. I like their locking system. :D No problem with sharpening here but my single sided one is a bit of a pain. They are not on the high end of the Rockwell scale but I prefer it that way as my knives are treated like tools. Chipping is a risk with something too hard.

As for that model 14440SB- I'd be worried that giant hole in the blade would make it less sturdy when it was needed as a prybar.

The Vex looks like a nice traditional style done in modern materials.

I think that was CRKTs slogan for a long time. Something like, "A knife is the most expensive pry bar you'll ever own!"

I have 3 CRKTs and 2 have busted tips! :homer:

LOL, I like to by my knives used so I don't cry when they get beat up. Sounds like you need to grind those two into chisel tips!

i agree with aloha. benchmades are simply well made and really aren't that much more expensive. i like that they're made local to me as well.

FYI, the vex is part of their "red class" knives that are made overseas. the blue, black, and gold class knives are made here and are much nicer. i have a blue class rescue and a red class folder and the difference is night and day.

I carry a Benchmade Griptilion 550 with me. When I jumped out of the truck and shot my deer this year, it was the only knife I had with me, and stayed that when my hunting buddy went back to camp to get help. I used the kinfe to field dress the deer and then skin it when I got back to camp. I sharpened it once during the skinning process and once after we were all done. It's still razor sharp today. After this experience I am sold on the Benchmade products.

I've got three BM knives, all issued. I have carried one daily for about 5 years and really beat the hell out of it, but it still works as good as new with a drop of gun oil on the hinge every once in a while. I stopped EDCing my autos though and carry my only BM manual opener, I'm paranoid about what local cops would do to me if they didn't like it. The axis lock mechanism on the newer BM knives is absolutely bulletproof, the closest thing to a fixed blade you can carry in a pocket IMO. My favorite knife (and the one I would recommend to the OP) is this one, either in auto, assisted, or manual depending on local laws:

The slim profile and grips make it carry very easily in the front pocket.

I've used the crap out of my SOG FLASH II for the last few years and it's held up GREAT! What I enjoy most is the grip I have on the blade, it's a thick handle and that's probably wide.

Benchmade Griptillian w/D2 steel (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0022073516108a&type=product&cmCat=search&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&QueryText=benchmade&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=benchmade&noImage=0) = *drool* Another one I love to carry.

I think I found my new carry piece. I stopped in to a local hunting supply store and fell in love with this SOG. SOG Spec-Elite I. It is 4.3oz, fits in the pocket nice and I believe it to be better than the CRKT. So far the opening is amazing. There is very little effort both in and out. The texured grip is also a plus. My crkt was smooth and I always had the fear of ripping my fingers. This SOG is rated for 1100 pounds of force on the lock.

Time will tell but so far I'm very happy. Total cost was expensive at 107 being local.

I have a very similar version of that knife, the SOG Pentagon Elite. Excellent knife and I've had it since they came out with the first version in 98-99. It's semi-retired now for a SogTac but it is a great knife.

Looks like a knockoff of the Axis lock, I like it.

I'm glad you didnt get the Vex. I bought one from knifecenter and shipped it right back in trade for a Sequel after trying one out locally. It was mostly the axis lock that sold me.

I don't know who rips off who and honestly I don't care much. I care about how it functions and the function of the lock is absolutely brilliant. I can swing the lock back and the knife almost falls open. Same way open to close. I'm really impressed with the spring loaded closed function as well since it is tip up. I hope that saves my fingers.

I have a Kershaw Avalanche also - paid about $80 for it. Excellent knife.
An Avalanche is like the "cadillac" version of a Blackout - S30v steel vs. 440a steel, micarta scales vs. plastic handle. Twice the price but they are shaped almost identically.

Pros:
-Made in USA Kershaw (Kai/Kershaw's "upper end")
-Can be carried tip up or tip down
-"Speed-safe" is best assisted open mechaism on the market IMO - it's faster than a switchblade and legal to carry in most states.
-S30v takes a *razor* edge and holds it
-Very solid construction
-Micarta scales are very easy to shape & sand if you want to "reprofile"

Cons:
-S30v tends to chip because of it's grain structure (very small chips)
-S30v hard to sharpen unless you use a diamond hone (relatively easy with diamond hone)
-The thumb-side scale requires a little "clearancing" for the thumb stud to be practical (It's a few mm too shallow & narrow from factory)

Don't know the exact dates but SOG has had this lock for a long time, I want to say it came out right before the Axis lock, if not at the same time.

I was thinking 107 was alot. Also wish I'd know you carried SOG would ahve looked you up when I got mine.

Pretty much all you have to do it pull the lock back and flick your wrist and it's open.
