: Jergen's Trail Area - Soon to be Closed?
randii 10-19-2001, 12:07 PM If you didn't make it to the meeting last night, too bad -- there was plenty of notice: http://www.pirate4x4.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=10&t=014508 and in the Land Use Section -- and also on the BLM Website.
About ten of us did make it there (the best showing yet for 'wheelers!), and it was STILL pretty gloomy.
The homeowners in the area are VERY organized... I've been attending meetings at this planning session for more than a year, and I've never seen 'em present in these numbers... or nearly as well prepared. <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">
Our only chance to retain any significant 'wheeling in that area is to show up en masse... not just to ONE meeting, but to the REST of the planning meetings. Even then, this group only sets recommendations, so we'll have to engage in the Pine Hill Preserve Planning Process, as well, to carry those recommendations forward. There's no guarantees that we'll retain the right to 'wheel there, even then... there are a lot of forces at work on the Pine Hill Preserve issues.
Here's one thing I can guarantee: if we don't show up in large numbers and sanely present a case for rational, responsible wheeling... we won't even have a chance.
We met up outside the meeting afterwards, a bit shell-shocked... but we formed a plan:
* I'm going up there this weekend to shoot slides of the area.
* Dan and Audra are printing out articles and pictures from the web that show 'wheelers maintaining the land
* Mike provided documentation of the maintenance work done by FOTR up on the Rubicon
* Vince is going to talk to Fish & Game law enforcement officer
* Someone was going to produce the BLM's 'letter of permission' to run Wildcat Canyon
* Folks who were there vowed to make it a repeat performance next
What are YOU doing?
The next meeting is next Tuesday. If you don't show up to defend the land, then don't <IMG SRC="smilies/crybaby2.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/crybaby2.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/crybaby2.gif" border="0"> when you can no longer drive to it. Writing letters and making phone calls won't even touch this process... it is a community-involved planning process. The only way to have a say is to show up at each meeting and make yourself heard.
Here's where the BLM posts the meeting schedules: http://www.ca.blm.gov/folsom/meetings.html
Be there.

Whitewater 10-19-2001, 12:55 PM I'd like to thank everyone who attended. Let me know if there is something I can do from down here.
Big Rich 10-19-2001, 01:28 PM Randii as I stated at our pow wow after last night meeting I will not be able to attend Tuesday's meeting, I am challenaging least four others who can make it to take my place. We need to state as clearly as possible why we as responsible 4 wheelers can make a difference in this area, by educating the irresponsible 4 wheelers who use this and other areas. If we allow the continued irresponsible use of our open areas we will certianly lose more than just the Jergens area. All Trails area coming under fire from elitest homeowner groups, radical enviromentalist, and misinformed neighbors and friends. We "the 4wheeler community" can and have been our own worse enemy, let's wake-up and get involved now, before all is lost....... <IMG SRC="smilies/pissed.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/pissed.gif" border="0">

maniac 10-19-2001, 05:45 PM Just wanted to reiterate what Randii and Rich have said. There were approximately 40 people at the meeting to give recommendations for future uses to the "Jergens Trail". Bill Center, our local supervisor, was in attendance and listening very closely to the concerns of the majority. Unfortunately, the majority consisted of older local homeowners who have no interest other than having exclusive use of the BLM lands bordering their properties.
Unless we come together as a group of responsible 4-wheelers concerned with keeping our public lands open to the public we will lose not only Jergens Trail but this will set another precedent for closure of public lands especially to OHV uses.
I am asking, no BEGGING, any and all of you that are concerned with land closure to be at the next meeting. The meeting is at the Odd Fellows Lodge in Coloma, Tuesday night at 6:30. For further information call 530-642-2450. --Mike
Lance 10-19-2001, 05:53 PM I should be able to make it.

SweetCJ7 10-20-2001, 07:31 AM I'm there!
All meetings are tentatively scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the community of Coloma (outside the town of Placerville) at the Oddfellows Hall
What can I bring?
GearMan 10-20-2001, 08:29 AM remember Salmon Falls Road?that is less then 5 miles from what you are trying to save. it was all BLM land to that we could wheel on. No more it is all homeowners now. I will choose my battles more realistic. that is one fight you wont win. When you have 1000 people willing to pay over 100,000 for a 1/2 acre lot. that is more money then i would be willing to spend to keep a dirt road open. as for devoping the con i have my money ready to buy into mark smiths club if that is what it takes.
BigDan 10-20-2001, 08:32 AM You Can Bring-
*Yourself
*Your Friends/relitatives
*Pictures/video/slides of clean up actitivy's
*Your Balls(while there you have to talk and explain why we should be able to use this land to the angry homeowners, greenies)
*Your manners (this is a place of disscuusion not fighting)

FLASHLIGHTMAN 10-22-2001, 08:18 AM The Rubicon had erosion problems, whats their reasonoing for closing Jergans??
ok
Here's a quote from the BLM site...
Recently, OHV use in the Weber Creek area has increased, causing noticeable damage to botanical resources. The confluence of the South Fork American River and Weber Creek has become a weekend party spot for young people. OHV use and the parties at the river have resulted in severe erosion, destruction of riparian vegetation, and litter. Residents of an adjoining subdivision are concerned with the possibility of a wildfire being ignited. Vehicle access to this area will be addressed both by the Pine Hill Preserve management administrators and the BLM South Fork of the American River planning process.

I will be busy all day today with other projects(unavoidable ones) and then tonight I have to get organized and setup for the job starting tomorrow. Unfortunately since I am totally in debt, I need to work first and save the wheelin space later.

randii 10-23-2001, 02:40 PM We gotta make this meeting standing room only tonight!!
Tonight and every night -- as noted above, we need to show up at each and every one of these meetings until this deal is settled, to make the most out of this particular management process.
Frankly, we're already behind a bit, since few folks have attended the years' worth of meetings leading up to this, but we can still have a very active impact upon the BLM planning by showing up consistently to represent our cause. The homeowners are certainly showing up!
The battle is NOT lost... but I guarantee it will be if we don't engage NOW in THESE meetings. There continues to be plenty of notice for these meetings http://www.pirate4x4.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=10&t=014508 and in the Land Use Section -- and also on the BLM Website: http://www.ca.blm.gov/folsom/meetings.html

Pirate trail is a different trail, nobody had initiation there <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">
The trail is not the only thing being closed though - the entire area is so that INCLUDES the pirate trail which is allready off limits from what I am told.

A couple of clarifications... AFAIK, NONE of this land is currently closed, though the BLM could slap an administrative closure on this at any time (that's what they did to Surprise Canyon).
There was a seasonal closure on this land in early 2001, but that has been lifted.
Local clubs are operating under what could be called a 'gentlemen's agreement' not to run Wildcat Canyon, but runs down to to the river are permitted, and even recommended if they include efforts to clean up the dumping along the 2WD sections of the road and any slight litter that exists along the 4WD sections of the road.
Do keep in mind that the folks who want to close the land ARE watching... and be on your best behavior.

twn44s 10-23-2001, 10:30 PM Tonights meeting went so so , we need to show up and start bargaining to keep this area open through education and sound reasoning with the other folks at the meeting . There was allmost just standing room there to bad we were not the majority.
THE NEXT MEETING IS ON NOV 1st (thursday)
AT THE ODD FELLOWS HALL IN COLOMA , BRING LEVAL HEADS AND BE READY TO TALK IT OUT.
Grim Reaper 10-24-2001, 01:05 PM I have been involved in some of these meetings before in the southeast. They can get nasty. Been to some 10 year revision stuff as well as the roadless crap.
LARGE NUMBERS OF WARM BODIES ARE NEEDED.
We swarmed some of the meetings for TN and what a site. Most of the previous meeting were mostly GAG's and hippies showing up. Southern Four Wheel Drive www.sfwda.org (http://www.sfwda.org) and their Land Use Dirrector really worked on getting the word out and got MAJOR turn outs. So many showed up the FS was having to find venues big enough to handle the crowds. We overfilled a middle school!
One of the smartest things that was done is get some other groups invloved. Groups like hunters are often not up on trail closure. They are seasonal users so the show up and find places closed with no clue. FIND them and get them to show up and pass the word to their groups. Their interest are just as at stake. ATV and Motor cycle groups also have the same interest and may not be aware of the meetings so find them also.
The TN meetings went so well that TN is looking at opening trails simular to Tellico. They saw the dollars towns like Murphy NC were bringing in from all the wheelers and wanted a slice of the pie. A lot of the trails they are looking at opening will back right up to Tellico <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
Good luck guy's. If I were about 800 miles closer I would be there.
