project vehicle, but still neat... not a fan of the uber-wide rear end though.

pennsylvaniaboy 11-03-2007, 08:58 AM wow thats pretty cool. i would make some changes that shifter is gay. andits wide but a different look. i would imagine they would sell pretty well with some changes
4Mogger 11-03-2007, 09:04 AM There would be waiting lists for years. I do not think they could build them fast enough. What motor is in the project truck? Hino?
I think they should convince CAT to license a motor to Toyota.
*EDIT*
ENGINE Hino JO8E-TB Medium Duty 6 cylinder Turbo Diesel (intended for 35K lb truck)
DRIVETRAIN Eaton 5 speed manual transmission (medium duty application)
Hino Medium Duty rear end with Meritor Axles
Alcoa 22.5X9 Dually rear wheels and Floatation wheel fronts
The crown jewel of the Dually is a JO8E 8.0-liter inline six turbodiesel, making around 300 HP and 600 lb.-ft. of torque. Shoehorning that kind of mill into the tight confines of the Tundra proved to be a challenge. The body had to be lifted off the frame by three inches and after some hacking and chopping of the firewall, they were finally able to fit the 1,500 pound engine into the bay. Between fitting the oil burner into the snout and mating it to a five-speed Allison tranny, the interior accoutrements have suffered – the HVAC controls are nonfunctional and the massive stick is there to provide additional leverage when shifting gears.
bhaugen 11-03-2007, 09:23 AM IMO that is going to be way expensive for the components that they put in there. 1500 lb engine is approx 4-500lbs heavier than the cummins. They are going to have to mate an auto behind that engine, cause we as americans are getting to lazy to shift a manual. It will be interesting to see what the final product will be. We all know its just a matter of time before they jump into the 3/4 and 1 ton truck market.
Po' riggity 11-03-2007, 04:40 PM Yup... If the gas powered tundra they have now with 1/2 ton components is over 32k for one with 4x4.. I can only imagine the diesel version dually with medium duty components would probably be double that.. I'll stick to my cummins.

SanDiegoCJ 11-03-2007, 05:09 PM Whopp-T-Doooooooooooo. 300hp and 600 ft/lbs from an 8.0L diesel. :shaking:
nissancrawler 11-03-2007, 05:19 PM I love the nit-picking on a concept. They already said anything production would be quite a bit different. i doubt they're going to be putting body lifts and hacking firewalls on all their diesels.
I would be interested in one, IF: A. they offered it in a bare bones edition, cloth seats, manual windows, manual locks, manual seats, manual tranny, I don't need any fancy bullshit to pay for, and B: If they could keep pricing competitive to "american" (HA! like that exists anymore) vehicles.
PhantomEB 11-03-2007, 06:30 PM Meh we passed the yota dealership today and the fiancee said the funniest thing I ever heard her say about any new vehicles lately was that it seems Toyota thought it was smart to combine the looks of a Ram and a SuperDuty then call it a truck of their own???
warpdriv 11-06-2007, 03:55 PM I hope they will finance it for 10 years. That will be the only way I could afford it.:grinpimp:
crashnzuk 11-06-2007, 05:55 PM Am I missing something? Allison makes a 5 speed manual trans?
Travis..
4Mogger 11-06-2007, 06:01 PM I'd buy one. A reliable truck, even at 50 grand, that would not self destruct in less than 100K miles?
A cummins in the Dodge is great, but the rest of the truck is crap. Ford seems better built but the current motors suck for reliability. The Toyota would do both, and exceed both in quality. I think 300 hp and 600 lb/ft would be a good start and you know the motor would have tons of potential and still be hell for stout.
alwayzbroken 11-07-2007, 05:26 PM Meh we passed the yota dealership today and the fiancee said the funniest thing I ever heard her say about any new vehicles lately was that it seems Toyota thought it was smart to combine the looks of a Ram and a SuperDuty then call it a truck of their own???
Does your fiancee purchase all her vehicles based on color also?
89_chevy_diesel 11-07-2007, 06:11 PM i like it. it has that heavy/bulky/terminator look. of course those fenders dont need to go alll the way to the back of the bed. and it needs a long bed. thats about all i would change. and i would also make that shifter shorter. if people bitch about it being hard to shift tell them to start liften weights.
Given the current reliability record of Toyota Tundra, I wouldn't pay a premium for it. Other then that its cool. Not sure what my next truck will be. No complaints on the Chevy, I suspect a CTD would serve me fine. The new F450 sure looks sharp...
When I bought the Chevy I test drove 20 vehicles and could never justify the premium for a Toyota. Nissan on the other hand has pricing where it needs to be. How about a cheaper 3/4 ton diesel?
Corn_Smuggler 11-07-2007, 08:09 PM I'd be all over the Tundra if the reliability is there.
Cougar67 11-09-2007, 11:54 AM I won't pay the 30 grand for a new Tacoma so there is no way I would buy that thing they probably want 70-80 thousand dollars for it! Come on an 8.0 liter diesel that only makes 300 horsepower my 2003 Cummins did that!
blackduramax 11-09-2007, 12:04 PM The concept part is what makes me not pay much attention period. I wouldn't mind seeing something from Toyota that was closer to reality.
nissancrawler 11-09-2007, 01:47 PM I won't pay the 30 grand for a new Tacoma so there is no way I would buy that thing they probably want 70-80 thousand dollars for it! Come on an 8.0 liter diesel that only makes 300 horsepower my 2003 Cummins did that!
:shaking: Try reading first. That engine is NOT going to be in their diesel truck. Who the fuck cares what it makes? Are you buying the concept truck from Toyota? No? Then it doesn't make any difference.
They chucked a medium duty truck engine in. All medium duty/heavy duty engines are "underrated" for longevity, because many run near 100% all the time. Most pickups don't, so they up the power on them. I'm sure the diesel that goes in will be comparable to, if not above the specs on the big 3 when it comes out.
Cougar67 11-09-2007, 03:55 PM NissanCrawler exactly where does it say they are not going to use the Hino engine? I hope Toyota develops their own diesel and hopefully it will be closer to 6 liters than 8
