: What gears to run?
penguin 06-21-2002, 11:06 PM I am building a sammy, I am running 35's with the tracker 1600. I was thinking of the 5:89s. I want to have pleanty of power over stock. I was told that 5:89s with the transfer case geared down would be to low. What should i run? Its going to be a daily driver, but at the same time i want to hit the trails and snow. Info, thanks.
mud-magnet 06-22-2002, 07:49 AM hey, 35"s will break your axles........ but on a DD it should last pretty long........ a baby lobster(t-case from a 84 zuki) and 5.13(2 sets of front tracker R&P's from a standard) should be low enough.........or run the 5.89s instead.........
should be plenty with the 1.6L.........

spencurai 06-22-2002, 10:27 AM i agree!! 35's are wayyyy too big for zuk axles!! go for some nice wide 33 meat and stay off the go pedal. i would go for some t-case gears. probably 6:1s since it is always best to do it the right way the first time!! :D some axle gears would be nice too. if you went with t-case gears, and 35's, you are gonna need some deep r&p gears to turn those suckers!!
jims4x4 06-22-2002, 11:01 AM I got 35's,toy axles with 5.29's locked front and rear with a 4.16 t-case gear set and Mine does just fine.Would do great with the 1.6...soon very soon

This is the key, he DOESN'T have toy axels. If you want to keep the 35's, get yota axels, if not, get rid of the 35's or buy every birfield you can get your hands on!

penguin 06-22-2002, 02:16 PM I ran 42's on a set of sammy axels for a while, but it was only a street driver. I didnt have anny problems. I know a few people who run 35's on stock axels and havent had anny problems yet.
NC Zuk 06-22-2002, 03:56 PM I am running stock a stock t-case, stock sammie axels/housing, 5:38's, and 33" tires. I have been told by numerous people that the 5:38's correct almost perfectly for 35's. The problem is, that with 5:38's the pinion gear is awefully small and more prone to breakage than other r&p gears. I, however, have had no problems with mine and thay have been in over a year. I just think that the 35's are just too big for the stock birfields if you do hard wheeling. Best of luck!

Tusker 06-22-2002, 04:55 PM I ran 5.125's with the 4.89 t-case and 33's on an 8-valve 1600. Got 60 mph at 4000 rpm in 5th. I would definitely go with a 4.89, 5.9 or 6.1 t-case. The 4.16 just isn't low enough, especially for those big tires. I'd recommend at least a 4.62 R&P or lower. The lower the better at least on the trail. Lower than 5.125 and you can't drive at highway speeds too well any ore. If you get too low of a t-case and don't lower your R&P, you put one serious strain on your t-case housing, mounts, and arms. With the GRSII and the stock R&P's, I toasted t-case mounts as well as t-case bushings regularly. No problems since going to the 5.125's (I'm sure all the extra steel and mig wire under there helped too :D )
By the way, what they said on the 35's. Your birf's won't last at all in the rocks with 35's. IMHO, 33's are the absolute limit for stcok axles, and even then only if you have a light touch.
weezman1 06-22-2002, 05:42 PM So... what if i was to run the 6.1's with stock R&P's, til i did my axle swap (D44's with 5.38's), but with beefy tcase arms and poly mounts??? Will the arms and mounts hold up til then?
mud-magnet 06-22-2002, 05:52 PM probility not, i blow the stock poly mounts with my stock t-case, i'v never twised a mounting arm yet though....... maybe when i go with lower gears...... i'd get the beefy t-case arm and rubber mounts from rocky road......
did anyone try the "Bomb-proof" rubber mounts yet???? do they hold up good??? worth getting ect.??? i can't stand these stock rubber mounts any more........:D
jims4x4 06-22-2002, 07:31 PM i love my mighty kong t-case mount/skid plate.might wanna check it out also
Shawn_C 06-22-2002, 07:35 PM I bent my arms as soon as I got my 1.6 installed. There not bent alot, but enough to throw it out of gear under hard acceleration, also gives me some vibes while on the road.

Should be fine. Check out the new Super Beefy Mounting System from RRO. I'll be installing mine very soon.
