Is there anything in the park or the adjacent area that is difficult at all? Or really Scenic?
We have a time share at Palm Springs for a couple of days and will be headed that way.

In the mid 90's I used to go camp and wheel/ride at a dry lakebed just north of the 62 between the city of Joshua Tree and 29 palms. There was a really nice mix of terrain, lots of washes and hills, even some good size sand dunes. Can't remember if there were any rocks though. My buddy that I used to go there with went back recently and said it's still the same. It's been so long I couldn't give you directions, maybe another member here knows where I'm talking about? There's a trail called Berdoo inside the JT nat'l Park but I hear it's pretty easy.

Pretty sure most of the trails in Joshua Tree are off limits . The trials that are open are mostly fire roads . Still a very nice place to go check out . If you want some wheelin go to the Salton Sewer and turn right . Lots of fun , forgiving wheelin out there . Truck Haven ( most people refer to this area as the Tierra Del Sol Safari )is very nice as is Berego . We also have some hardcore stuff out on the fault line .

The dry lakebed I'm referring to is not inside the park, it's north of the 62. Just talked to my buddy, It's called Coyote Dry Lake. Take Broadway north off the 62 and it runs right into it. The whole area around the lake has trails, but be careful if you go alone, there are smaller canyons and ravines that you can drop into and then not be able to make it out of, if you have a winch and pull-pal then no prob.

Thanks for the replies. There is a hike near the south entrance to the park that we will be doing, probably will check out some of the parks backroads in that area after hiking

I went up to Joshua Tree with a few other wheelers once, and while nothing real hardcore where we went,it was still interesting to check out all the old mines. We went up via Berdoo canyon rd. in Indio...just head east on I-10 if you are starting out in Palm Springs, exit Dillon and turn left, Berdoo canyon rd. is e few miles up on the right. It's paved for a short distance but turns into a dirt road and then a trail but nothing a stock 4wd can't handle.
There is a visitors center in the park that has maps to the mines, we did have to pay $10 for a pass to be in the park which was 5 or 6 yrs ago now.

There is alot of cool old mining roads along the north side of the 10. Between the park and the highway... or take the dirt roads up to Big Bear some good trails in there. Just off the 62 before Yucca Valley... or run to the Hammers and watch the mayhem out there. There is ton of stuff too do offroad in that little part of the desert. I spent a few years in 29 Palms and there was always somethin to go check out in the desert.

There are some places to wheel near Joshua Tree/29. Here are the GPS coordinates. It is dunes, fire roads and some pretty good rock crawling from what I remember.

Berdoo is a trash heap at the south end and not very pretty until you are in the park proper. Then it runs to the south end of the Geology Tour. It was an access road for building the aqueduct and camp Berdoo’s foundations are there, usually covered in trash and spent shotgun shells.
Pinkam is prettier and if you run it north, you’ll end near the Cottonwood Visitor’s Center.
Both of those are on the south end of the park.
Brooklyn Mine and the Dale Mining district run north to south between a little ways north of Cottonwood to 62 near 29 palms.
Outside the part is the area just west of the college up off 62 in the town of Joshua Tree, coyote Dry Lake as discussed above. The hills around it have some stuff, parts are a dumping ground for trash.
If you are in Palm Springs, you might like Anza Borrego better or the Chuckwallas.
