I bought a 1988 Sammi that already had a few modifications done to it. I just want some technical advice. The engine has dual side draft carbs but other than that the engine and transmission are pretty well stock. It has 4:16 gears in the t-case and stock axles. I am getting ready to pick up a set of Toyota Axles and rebuild them with lockrights both front and rear. When I do this I want to put on jeep springs. I know of a few different place that offer kits to do that but I'm not sure of what they do include or what they should Include. I want to try and take out some of the weaker driveline components, so should I also be looking at stronger driveshafts? If so where should I get them and what should they be. Should I look at a lower set of gears? I just need an idea of what I should be looking to do to try and take out my weakest components. One thing I am sure of is the axles I already bent one of the stock ones.

what size tires do you plan on running? that will dictate the gear ratio needed.

Got the toy axles they have 4.10 gears and disc brakes front and rear. They will have lockrights before they go under the truck. Still needing some advice though.

Your 4.16 and 4.10 should do alright for all around with 35's. Axles are always the first to go if your looking for a strong setup and your axles sound good. Id say hold of on driveshats until you pop one :flipoff2: I never had problems with my driveshafts when i had a toy axled set up with similar gearing and i beat the dog piss out of it. . .

If you didnt blow the tiny u-joints left and right you werent driving to much piss out of it. My wife could waste 3 or 4 in a day with 31s and 4.16 t-case gears. The rear flange that bolts to the pinion flange is wasted so I am putting 1310 u-jointed shafts in ours.

Figured he'd do what most with toy swaps ive seen do and go to toy shafts. Then again im not on here much and can only judge from what ive seen go through local shops, and good for your wife, she drives like a man.

That's probably the shitty u-joints from parts stores.
You have to use either OEM or Mitsubishi OEM, then they will hold up to a good beating. TT sells the Mitsubishi alternative for half the price of OEM Suzuki and they are just as strong.
First time I went out on my 33s with shitty part store Taiwan u-joints I broke a rear within 20 minutes, and 2 others were already clunking. I replaced them all with the Mitsubishi ones and beat the hell out of them with no breakage.

4.16:1 case gears and 4.10:1 axles gears are not going to work for 35's...
4.16;1 and 4.57 are barely enough for 33's go with a 5.29 in the axle when you do your lock rites.

i think you will be fine bfg 35s arent a actual 35 the measure smaller like most tires everything sounds good but for that lift you were talking about look at LOWRANGEOFFROAD.COM (http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/samsuspension.htm)
good luck on your build

This is just my advice, take it for what its worth.
I dont think that the 4.10 gears are good enough for 35's. If you were just driving it on the street, probably.
I have Toy axles with 5.29 gears in them. I have a spool in the rear and an Aussie up front. I have 6.5:1 in the Tcase. I run 35 Pro Comps on 15X10 Steelies. I have YJ springs front and rear, and used the Trail Tough complete YJ kit. I bought from TT, because everything is included. Also, they give printed instructions, and SKY didnt. I did get the kit from SKY for the front Toy axle that allows you to center the axle with less hassle.
With driveshafts, what I did is cut my stock front in half and cut a piece of tubing that would sleeve over it. I cut the tubing about 1.5 inches too long. This was about how much I needed in length. Welded it up solid, and installed it. Havent had a problem with it.
For the rear driveshaft, I found me a front CV driveshaft out of an 81 toyota. I am not sure, but I think this might be the only year that doesnt have to be cut down. I bought the shaft and completely rebuilt it. Everyone told me I was going to have to cut it down, as it would be too long. Well, other year models I have seen, that is true. But with the YJ's it fits in perfect.
I am also using RockRat RatAdapters. I am using one bolted to the Rear output of the Transfer case, and one on the pinion of the front Yota axle. These adapt the Yota pattern to the Suzuki pattern.
I am very happy with this setup. Here is a link to my build thread. It is long, but you are allowed to skim through it.
