I have noticed I have a rough sounding idle. The sound is the AC compressor pulley. The AC works but when it is off the pulley sounds bad, doesn't squeal or anything just rough. What are my options for replacement? The system works and doesn't leak. The clutch is good and engages. Is there a bearing I can replace? Is it a PITA and should I just replace the clutch?
On my OBA york I know I can pull off the clutch. It's a pain to get on and off and it requires me to take the compressor out of the truck. I would like to keep my system sealed but realize this may not be possible. Any experience would be helpful.

You can replace just the clutch assy without pulling the pump. You need the right puller for the pump, I assume you have the flat round r4 style. I have found that the replacement clutch assys dont last like the origional ones though. Maybe see if ac delco sells a clutch assy. The murray or 4 seasons ones are much softer metal in the contact plates and only last maybe 25 to 30K miles as opposed to the OEm pump clutch which lasts over 100K. Note- I am in Houston. I changed the clutch twice on my 93 and then after it went out again I went ahead and bought an ac delco pump assy and put that in.

I assume I have the round r4 compressor. It's on the pass. side, is about 4 inches thick. It's a Delco part. I'd like it to last so I might look around for a dealer part. I'll also have to track down a pulley puller. I'm thinking a gear puller won't work. I used on my York but that is a bit different.

The same puller should work if you have the room. There is a bearing you can change but most likely you will have to go to a bearing specialty house to get one. Might be a lot less grief to just buy a new clutch assy and be done with it.
