I've got the opportunity to pick up a 91 Ford F350 X cab dually with a 20k mile 460 long block and 5 spd in it. Guy wants $3500, but will probably come down. 180k on the truck total. All 6 tires are good, has a fifth wheel and brake controller already. He said the tranny might have a problem, didn't know. Supposed to be a "ZF"? tranny that is beefy though. Might just be a clutch going bad. AC, power windows and locks, vinyl interior. I didn't get a chance to drive it yet, but it didn't look too bad for the price, especially if he's got the receipts for the engine replacement.
The bad, interior near the radio is ripped out, no radio. This isn't a big deal for me though. Front seats have covers, probably ripped. Back one in good shape, just vinyl. Back slider is broken, could get it replaced with glass insurance though. No cats, would need to add 2 of them to pass smog, plus who knows what else. He's smog exempt where he lives. No leaks on the rear end, tranny, or engine that I could see from underneath. The paint is faded white from the AZ sun, would need new paint to make it pretty again. Needs minimal body work before paint, but no big deal. Also has a toolbox I could probably talk him out of. Already set up for towing off a big Texas style rear bumper, which is all I'm gonna use it for.
Who has towed with one before and how did it do? I'm going to be hauling a 6000# Toy and trailer combo, or a 3500# boat. I'm thinking of offering him $2800 plus a set of rims for his Toyota and seeing if he'll take it. Throw $1000 into a paint job, clean the interior and fix the window and it seems like it'd be a decent tow rig for $4000? Let me have some opinions, KBB is about $7500 retail on it.
