I did a search and didnt find anything. I can get a good deal on a ford 9 inch witha 5 on 51/2 bolt pattern and is 54 inches wide. The guy doesnt know what gears it has and i havent looked at it yet but was wondering if there would be a carrier issue since i will be swapping in 4.56 gears. Also what year and model do you think it could be. and what about spline count. Thanks a bunch.

ford 9" carriers are good for every gear EXCEPT a 2.73, so you wont have a problem. As for the width, for it to be that narrow it would have to be from a small car, i think the Lincolns, but i can say that the EB Broncos are around 58(correct me if i'm wrong) and the older broncos and F150s(what i have) are 65, and then the vans are around 68-69". Since it is that small it is probably 28 spline. What is this going in? I got mine 65" for my XJ so that i will be a bit more stabil at 8" of lift.

i will be putting the ford 9inch in my cj7 and the guy said it would be 3 inches wider than my amc 20. I will be going soa on my stock cj springs.

Hey do you have any pics of your XJ with the Ford 9? Also..someone told me that an axle out of a lincoln continental (like 71-79) had disc brakes and were about 65" wide...sound like BS?

You have to clearance the third member around the front pinion support bearing in order to run thicker ring gears.

i have pics of the 9" sittin gin my garage, but it is not on yet. I have to wait until thursdays to buy stuff. I should have my 9" on in about a month. I am awaiting the spool, but the next two paychecks are going to my car payment and visa bill, then i have to get new springs and wheel cylinders, then new rims. Lincoln Versailles came with discs but i think they were only 58" wide, i looked at a few but they were all 28 spline and they have 4 link brackets. There may be some old Lincoln Continentals that have discs, and are wide but i'm not sure. A disced 9" will be around $300 more in the junkyard, and you will probably have to redo them since they are 25+ years old, so just get a drumed 9, then when you have the money call up tsmmfg.com and they can hook you up, that is where i am going to get my disc kit. I read that the 11" drums with some good shoes will shop very well....damn i need a raise. Hope this helps.

54" wide sounds like Mustang or Cougar, Early Bronco is 58" You only have to grind the case on some applications, I didn't have to touch mine for 5.38:1. No carrier breaks except for the extreme overdrive highway gear, some carriers have four pinion, some have two, and if it's 28 spline, you can't use a 31 spline carrier with 28 spline parts. I've been running my spooled 28 spline with a 103:1 first for a year and haven't broke it yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to see me shafts with a twist in them, jsut too lazy to pull them out and look, I'm building a 63" wide full-floating 9" with 35 spline shafts. 54" wide will be fine for a narrow track CJ (Pre-'80) but I'd look for an Early Bronco 9" and a Wagoneer Dana 44 front.
