: ford 460 and tranny options....
mustangsvo85 11-05-2007, 06:29 PM I currenty have a 74 f100 shortbed, but it is 2wd. I actually want to keep it that way though for a daily driver. The 302 is dying and I always wanted a 460 with a manual trans. I have a C6 in it, but I don't know what trans those years came with as a manual. Ive read alot about the ZF 5 speed and I like the idea of a 5 speed but a 4 would be ok as well. I have all the linkage from a 76 f250 with a 390 and a 3 speed w/granny trans.
I guess the real questions are;
-What a my trans options and which is cheapest?
-Do I have to convert from cable linkage to fluid linkage?
-Anything major gonna need to be done?
thanks
t120r 11-05-2007, 10:00 PM If the truck is a daily driver I would go with a ZF. The overdrive is well worth it. Plus the slave cylinder is externally mounted, so it's relatively easy to plumb.
crimsen 11-05-2007, 11:04 PM i am not sure what motors came with the zf 5 speed, but me and another guy both got one, from EFI engines, and the EFI bolt pattern is approx 1/2" off of the carb 460 pattern. no go.

You don't want to do this...I'll take the truck off your hands. :flipoff2:
Like I posted in your other thread, skip the BBF idea. But hey...It's your $$$. However, since you live in California...I'd be doing some heavy research into the various smog laws, before I start spending any money on parts.

Ummm, what? Then why is my 1988 ZF bolted up to my 1976 460?
it isn't a simple swap. I had to get a flywheel for a 1978 ford truck with manual and redrill it for the 1988 pressure plate. Then I used the 1988 clutch disk and found an off the shelf bushing for the pilot bearing. But it can be done just fine.
larboc@hotmail.com 11-06-2007, 06:14 AM And ZF's have 3 different patterns. diesel, 351, and 460. THe diesel has a taller first gear ratio.

74 is pre-smog here now, therefore I can pretty much do whatever and get away with it since they will never check. In 2003 the smog test laws quit applying to just vehicles manufactured before 1973 and went to a 30 yr rolling emissions law, ie in 2004 1974 vehicles were exempt and in 2005 1975 vehicles are now exempt. But Arnold freaking stopped it in 05. So now my 76 f250 4x4 is worthless here, it will never pass smog.
mustangsvo85 11-06-2007, 02:31 PM also, I have a 3 speed with granny 1st in my 76 with a 4x4 transfer case on it, will that bolt up to my 460? it is attached to a 390.

You would need a bell housing from a 460 that would mate to your 3 spd.
mustangsvo85 11-07-2007, 09:50 AM is it a common bellhousing, something I can grab at a junk yard?
GONWHLN 11-07-2007, 10:52 AM the 390 flywheel will bolt to the 460(need to have ballanced for the 460)351m,400 bellhousing 351 /400 starter ,clutch ,etc.all bolt together, easy set up.
Automatics -351M ,400,429,460 all have the same bellhousing pattern.
good luck

make sure you know if you have the internal or external balance 460. and the corresponding flywheel
mustangsvo85 11-07-2007, 05:56 PM how could I tell? motor is from a 60s ford
brewchief 11-07-2007, 07:12 PM If it's pre 79 it should be internal balance, IIRC there will be a counter weight behind the harmonic balancer.
