Started with this about a year and a half ago
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b37/chewning37/offroading005.jpg

made sliders/bumpers with my bud

went through many lifts, stayed on 3.5 super flex with 2 inch pucks and 32's for a while, learned to wheel at bigdogs icebreakers in 07

finally saved up and got claytons 7 inch kit
lucked out and got 5 35" claws in a trade from a friend for a great price.so that was tire of choice
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b37/chewning37/aLongarms.jpg
Put in a HP30 and a 8,8, locked them both with 4.56 gears
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b37/chewning37/alongarm004.jpg
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b37/chewning37/alongarm015.jpg

went with t&t OTK steering
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b37/chewning37/abitch003.jpg

Tom woods front and rear d/s
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa45/zj95maxx/random.jpg
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b37/chewning37/abitch007.jpg

Did shake down run with the claytons at camp jeep 07..worked great

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa45/zj95maxx/Campjeep2007013.jpg

then of course my rear coils started unseating everytime I flexed out

got some 35" a/ts for street cruising to save the claws life
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa45/zj95maxx/DSC03249.jpg

of course, had to upgrade the seats:flipoff2:
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa45/zj95maxx/random013.jpg

to fix my rear coil problem, at first I just added a extension
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/rock_crawler/Maxxs%20stuff/DSC03270.jpg

that lasted all of 3 min
http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa45/zj95maxx/DSC03272.jpg

decided to trap the coils at the top instead.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/rock_crawler/Maxxs%20stuff/DSC03276.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/rock_crawler/Maxxs%20stuff/DSC03281.jpg

I love having top and rear trapped..makes it more stable and I never have to worry about my rear coils popping out.

due to the brackets, my tires rubbed when I flexed so i needed to order some spidertrax wheel spacers for the rear..after I put them on, it made the front look funny so I ordered some for the front as well.

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa45/zj95maxx/fawk014.jpg

because of my situation..and the fact that the only other axle i would put in the front is a 60..and that cant happen now..i decided to polish the turd a bit

Nice Zj man, cool build too, wish I would have better pictures of my build life for my XJ

I recommend getting rid of the single sheer heim RE trac bar(amazing you never snapped that thing off with the wheelin you do)

upgrade to the RE HD TB (6130 I think) or the TNT TB

Awesome job with the ZJ man. Nice work doing all the bumpers yourself and not cheesing out buying them. I had an XJ on 36" IROKs. They're fawking sweet tires aren't they?

Had to get rid of the Jeep in a college/money kinda situation but the plan is to build a 5.9L ZJ on 60's & 36" IROKs again & maybe an exo. Love seeing the progress all in one shot. And I wheeled the XJ pretty good on the stock D30 with no issues after ditching the vacuum disconnect for a one-piece. Had a truetrac in it..didn't really like it though.

Here's a pic of the XJ..

pulled super 88 shaft where my seal was busted..the seal is part of the bearing(all one piece) so scince seal is busted, bearing is going bad, new one is coming in, in the morning..wondering if a bad wheel bearing would make it not want to move? who knows..prob not. Fixing that tomorrow. Still confused..it was moving last time i parked it and I havnt done anything to drivetrain except for remove front shaft and replace steering box.:mad3:

Take 15 minutes to diagnose, get all the wheels off the ground, pull drive shafts and start spinning tires and you will know really quick what is locked and what is not.

I LOVE the tube fender protection, I have been thinking about something like that for mine.

Once my LA's are in and the final tire size is determined I will def. be adding something very similar to yours.

Looking great.

On your Super 88, I thought the super 88 had new ends that eliminated the "c" clips??

Ya he had every option added to the truss.... shipping cost... and anything else .... truss costs around $400 shipped.. I called TNT and had a price quote and hung up

"Product Part Number Price
Dana 30 Bare Truss JEFT-30 $149.95
add UCA Mounts w/ Bushing Assy JEFT-30-UCA $99.95 "

--copied and pasted from there site

and the added cost not shown there is the upper trac bar mount ... another $100 and then finally shipping

another example/ option
http://www.jeepinoutfitters.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=683

add on everything he has and then check out and check shipping costs of the mess of plate steel(weighs a "ton") ($55 shipped)

overall price 360ish

i have seen some cages work out with it flaring in or out, but, me personally, if your going to do something do it right. sometimes misstakes are a little costly (price of tubing). did your freind pay for the tubing? if he did and it was your screw up, i'd fix it. but if your hooking him up then make it look at nice and clean as you can. but thta's just my $.02 the jeep looks goo man, keep up the good work.

Either cut the center and splice in a few inches of tube (drill holes, put a slug tube inside the main tubes, plug weld, grind, happy face) or cut the whole center out and ust them as uprights for the roof halo and then reuse the part you cut out as gussets or other small parts you need. Its not the end of the world, just be creative.

BrassMunkey4
01-09-2008, 09:36 PM
I would definitely redo that piece of the cage, you will be able to use that tube for plenty of other pieces, so it wont go to waste. I made a few screw-ups in the two cages I built, but i have no bent scraps left over, always found a place where they seem to fit perfect...

Where are you going in Midlo for a junkyard? I went down to the Richmond area with a buddy to look for stuff, but everything seemed expensive. I could use a rear 9", if you could point me in a cheap direction...

What do you mean by that last comment?

I think Pat should consider a 1.75" hole saw and move that A pillar forward some. I guess its personal opinion, but I'd think it would become a pain to always be squeezing around that A pillar. I think it'll hold up fine when you guys throw in the rest of the material, so its not a question of strength, just space.

He can get in and out just fine and he is bigger than I am, the xterras have TONS of leg room, very roomy.

heck, MY a pillar is prob more in the way than his..

had to chop part of the glove box on passenger side so I could still open it with the pillar there :flipoff2:

taking about the gashes in the cast.....

When was the last time you replaced something in there? Like, have you regeared recently or put a new locker in? Metallic flakes are fine anre are to be expected for the first few hundred miles and even longer if you don't do one style of driving and then change it after your break in your gears. Those score marks look fine. They look like they're on the carrier and not in a direction that would be associated with anything in the differential. Also, they're not at all polished looking, meaning that if it was shiny and had a polished look, it might be associated with something moving or caused by the rotation of the carrier....doesn't look that way to me. Those little guys? I wouldn't worry about those little guys.

Question..This is my steering, right. Ok. When driving, it is VERY sensitive. Turning is on a dime, new and kinda weird.
Think the angles would be better and might function better if the passenger side was down to the bottom hole? Right now it's on the middle one. Whatchya think?

Go for it. Plenty of guys use the TRE's (Vetteboy for one did at some point on his 60....may still use them, I donno) and I don't have anything to say about the ballistic fab arms....they're pretty new so I guess either none have failed yet or no one has gone "post the failure all over the internet" crazy yet. I've used a lot of ballistic stuff because of their prices and I've not been disapointed with failure of any component yet.

Was supposed to go wheeling the whole weekend, only went today because of the bad weather. First time wheeling in the rain, it went well. Had lots of fun, almost flopped a few times. No dings. Power steering line got punctured somehow so I need to replace that tomorrow.

Are you sure you didn't spin a tube on the 8.8? Not sure if you welded up the tubes to the housing didn't go through all the pages. Had a friend spin a tube and it made some strange noises on the road.

53guy
03-16-2008, 06:42 PM
Ummm, I'd say its your backlash. The pattern might be dead on, but if your backlash (space between the meshing gears) is too great, you'll have noise. "In spec" is 0.008"-0.015". Hoping you just left out a zero, if not, you're pretty crazy out. I'd double check my numbers if I were you. What are the runout numbers?

Grand_ZJ

pulled shafts from axle and noticed this..the bearing race has been seperated from the bearing..

would this be bad? thinking of replacing both bearings and seals AGAIN, see if that helps. then, the only thing left to be would be the gears..possible crush sleeve being too crushed? pinion preload is 16 and backlash is 0.012....any clues? I hate my jeep being down for so long!
anyone got the part number for the seal that could go on the super 88 shafts?

53guy
03-18-2008, 01:39 PM
That bearing and race seperation is fine and normal. You should look for scoring on the race, rollers, and wear on the cage, rollers, and race, look for any bluing or evidence of heat build up.

If you pulled the rear drive shaft and you hear a whine, what you are hearing is the coast side of the gears making that slight whine.....unless your pinion bearing or carrier bearings are toast. I still think your backlash is the reason you're getting that whine.

Grand_ZJ

53guy
03-18-2008, 02:01 PM
Take some numbers before you rip the carrier out, it'll really help you troubleshoot the problem. Didn't read it anywhere, but what were the runout numbers on the ring gear?

Grand_ZJ
03-18-2008, 03:24 PM
I am a novice to gear talk as I didnt do the gears, whats "runout numbers"?

53guy
03-18-2008, 03:58 PM
Runout is the measurment taken when you rotate the ring gear (when its installed) and measure how off-center the rotational path is. Kinda think of it as a warped bike tire, you can kinda see it wobble when you spin it, right? Well, take that and shrink it to like 0.003" and that's runout. You're looking to see if the ring gear or carrier might be warped or if an area might not be torqued down properly. Gear guru's, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what it is.

53guy

When you tear it appart, read this first and follow it.

http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/repair/axle/diagnosis/page5.html

Here's a little bit on backlash and why I think it might be your problem...

http://www.tpub.com/basae/129.htm

RING AND PINION BACKLASH.- The ring and pinion backlash refers to the amount of space between the meshing teeth of the gears. Backlash is needed to allow for heat expansion

As the gears operate, they produce friction and heat. This makes the gears expand, reducing the clearance between the meshing teeth of the gears. Without backlash, the ring and pinion teeth can jam into each other and fail in a very short period of time. However, too much ring and pinion backlash can cause gear noise (whirring, roaring, or clunking).

Grand_ZJ
03-20-2008, 04:00 PM
well...found out the carrier bolts were backed out, thus the noise..put them back in, adj backlash, checked pattern, bolted it up. the horrible sound is gone, but the sound that was there when i thought the original gears were burnt up is there, but quieter, but it sounds like it does when im running no rear shaft, I think it might be because I have holes in my floor, no carpet, I am just hearing the gears turning, that possible?

53guy

Just curious, did you do anything special, any precautions/mods, in welding up the clayton 7" lift? I've heard the unibody has some risk in welding since the rail is a bit thin.

nice...um...pipe fittings?

lol... um... yeah. What you see there is a quick fix to strengthen the uni-body after cutting the roof off until we can build a better cage for it. The rear tubes are actually non-functional since the bottom half of the hatch is welded. It will more than likely become a donor to my tube frame rock buggy project. But why not beat on it in the mean time?! Now, lets not hi-jack Grand_ZJ's thread. Sorry Grand_ZJ!! :smokin:
