: Cant decide...37s or 38s?
Ruckus 06-22-2002, 08:39 PM Ive got a 92 YJ with the stock 4.0L dana 44 front and dana 60 rear. I want to put either 37x12.5 SSRs or 38x14.5 SXs on by the end of the summer. Ill prob go to 4.88 gears soon , then the tires, then lift to accomodate. I wanted to do the 2.5" waggy springs like Rockslut and the 38s. The dilemma is i have no trailor for this and must still drive it on the street. I like my current 35" SSRs on the street and am sure the 37s wont be much different. But how are the SXs on the road? Also, im concerned about my D44 with the 38s. Are there any other 38s out there that might do better on road?
Thanks
Ryan
G.C. Bandit 06-22-2002, 10:03 PM If your going to regear why not just throw in some 5.13 or 5.38's, youll like it alot better. Deffinalely go with the 38 SX thats what im running and love them. My jeep is my daily driver that i commute in everyday, the only problem that i have is that my tires are way out of ballance, but it you keep up on that they should drive fine.
FULLSIZE 06-22-2002, 10:06 PM if you USE your 44 with a locker, it wont last with 37's or 38's. i love my 38sx's but they ride shitty compared to a radial 37. what'd you expect, a different response from the other 100 posts on this?:p
Ruckus 06-23-2002, 12:17 AM What would you recommend to beef up the 44 then? CTMs? What are some good shafts?

snoop dogg 06-23-2002, 12:27 AM i think you will be alright...a guy runs a scout II with a built 345 and granny low tranny and dana 44's front and rear with 38's and is fine...it definately depends on driving style though, but scouts are heavier and that is low gear and lots of torque, you can handle 38's and who cares about the ride on the road, even if it is a DD...just carry spare shafts and i would say beef it up with some warn shafts and ctms...i guess that is a good start for beefing up a 44. Its a driving style thing...if you are hard on it, it won't last.
1988YJ 06-23-2002, 05:42 PM I'm running 44/60 on my YJ with 37's, 5:38's and detroits. Last weekend on the con I blew out my u joints and took out my inners. I just got my CTM's and am waiting for my Warn alloys, I'm hoping this takes care of the problem. I think the detroits are harder on the u joints, even with the atlas and twin stick it's hard to pull them out, it seems like it locks in and won't open the front axle at times when I want to. I'm putting it back together with the detroit but might go to an ARB. I had ARB's on my last jeep and it was nice unlocking with the push of a button. This time I'll do away with the relay and solenoid and just use air switches and braided tubing.
bigdude 06-24-2002, 07:08 AM If you run rough terrain with a front locker that 44 will blow up often unless you up-grade the shafts and joints. (period)
I think you need more than 4.88s for the big 'uns. I say avoid SSR, I've seen too many cut.
Also, search about this sh!t. It's been covered many many times. You'll get all kinds of info.
If you're cheep, you might want to look into getting the TSL 38-12.50 Swampers. They're only ~$175 each. Food for thought.

Not just cheap but also a damn good tire. I love mine. Took a grooving iron to them and they are STICKY. Definitely another choice to consider if you want a swamper.
WideJ 06-24-2002, 12:20 PM I agree to steer clear of the ssr's
I have some 35x12.50's now and they're going to blow soon. MANY sidewall cuts and chunks out of the tread.
rockhog 06-24-2002, 12:33 PM DD =37" MTR's in my book. If ya didnt drive much on road 37 boggs or 38 sx's.
