So I have this stainless Commander with Pachmyer grips on it and I want some wood ones instead.

Here's what I have now.

Question is, what do I do about this part on the back of the grip, can I get a metal piece to replace the rubber one?

That's the mainspring housing, yes you can get aftermarket ones that are metal.

Have you considered micarta grips. There are some nice ones on the market.

Probably some kind of wood that I've never heard of and costs more per board foot than I make in 5 years. It'll undoubtedly look kickass when he's done, though. :D

Thanks guys:)

I want some checkered ones made out of Cocobolo (my favorite wood), they're readily availible so I'm just gonna buy them.

Wilson coco costs $60.
Ahrends coco are 30

As mentioned, tons of folks carry mainspring housings. Plain flat, plain humped, verticle lined, checkered, etc

Let me know what you are looking for

Hogue makes some nice cocobolo grips that cover the frontstrap with finger grooves in them. if i didn't shoot competition with my only 11911 (or I had another) I would already have them on my gun.

Shit.

I was sooooo looking forward to what you were going to make. This is like Doc buying an Hk-91 off the store shelf instead of starting a 10-page "how to" thread.

Ghey. :flipoff2:

Not that I don't like cocobolo grips (they are my favorite) but I hope you'll reconsider making your own. I have a set of plain jane walnut ones just collecting dust I'll be happy to send you as a template.

Sweet custom grips might be a new sideline for ya MD. I know I'd love to have a set for both my Star and my 1911.

MD, I also would be interested in custom grips.
No one makes any for the Ed Brown carry conversion and my 10-minute with a belt sander jobbies really suck ;)

I already tried getting grips from him. I think they're too small to turn a profit for his time... :(

Fawk profit, this is his breatheren we are talking about.:flipoff2: A fair price, sure, 60~80 bucks and they could be made out of scraps. Of course, spare time being what it is. :(

eidt, of course with his skills odds are I'd be afraid to use 'em and end up hanging them on the wall as a work of real craftsmanship. LOL

If you guys think $60-80 is "fair" for hours & hours of custom one-off work, I can see why he isn't looking to sell them on the side.

I don't think it's fair, which is why I didn't question his reasons when he said "Fawk no!" LOL

I'm going off some of the "customs" I've seen on the net offered in that range that are fairly plain but well made. Sack ride much?:flipoff2: Whatever he thought was fair and whatever someone was willing to pay would be a fair price ya think?

There's really no reason for me to make them when what I want is readily availible at a very low price. I just wand checkered ones and Wilson has them.

For me to sell a pair of grips I'd have to make them in about a half hour to compete with whats out there. In reality it would take me about 6 hours from start to finish to make one set with all the shaping and milling required, ckeckering would take even longer (especially since I've never done that), considering I bill $50 per hour that's an outrageously expensive pair of grips:eek::laughing::laughing::laughing:

Thanks for the leads, Wilson has everything I need;)

So I just took off the old grips and I found that the grip screw and threaded insert were froze up, so the threads in the aluminum frame came out with the grips:mad3:

Desert Jeepin

Well, atleast it's Al, so you can re-tap some bigger threads and pick some nice screws when you install your new grips

That thing has a alloy frame? Did not know that.

When you say insert, does that mean the frame had a insert that backed out with the grip screw? If so, just remove the insert from the grip screw, go to a hobby shop that does a fair amount of r/c stuff and see what they have.

You also could make your own insert from a small chunk of threaded rod that will go into the frame with locktite, cut it flush, punch it, drill it and tap it to the correct size. 4-40 most likely. Or see if helicoil offers a kit in the grip screw thread. I've made more than one insert and it really doesn't take long at all.

Grip bushings.
Pretty common problems with even steel frames.
Standard pack of 4 bushings is 7$ 080-568-004
The staking tool is a couple dollars 080-644-000. I also recomend locktite.
If the threads in the frame stripped you can get over sized bushings. Set of four is 12$ 080-570-000. The tap is 45$ 080-598-225.

As I mentioned I can do the wilson grip panels for 60$ 965-351-102.
If you need I can replace the bushings also.

if you like the textured front strap of the Pachmyer grip you can get a wilson stainless front strap 965-100-002

For the MSH, many choices. The one that resembles one that is on their now (stainless, arched, checkered) is 849-005-111
Same idea but with the extended mag well 849-011-102
