I was wondering if anyone could help me,
how hard is it to replace the ring and pinion gears in the rear end of a 2000 silverado 4x4 with the 5.3 L Vortec And how i would go about doing that.
help would be appreciated.

step 1: Remove Diff cover
step 2: remove gears
step 3: replace with new gears
step 4: put diff cover back on
Bam gear swap done.

Do you plan a ratio change if so you have to do the front as well?

You also will need to set your gear lash, basicaly how tight you ring is to your pinion.

Its probably a c clip axle, you'll need to remove those to pull the shafts.

If you are just changing the spiders, you shouldn't have to pull the carrier or the axles. Take the driveshaft off first so you can turn stuff by hand easily. Unbolt the crosspin and slide it out. This will allow the spiders to drop out either side. If you can get this far, the rest should just be intuitively obvious as you go through it.
If you do end up needing to pull the carrier for some reason, be sure to keep track of which shims go on which side and put them back EXACTLY the same way that they came out.

Also, go buy a book, they will tell you and usually show you pictures of how to do it. Did you grenade one of the gears, I did the same thing in my 2000 a couple years ago.

Well, when I did mine I was in the process of moving so I took it to the dealership, $1200 later it worked great. Try not to buy the cheapest gears you can buy, remember that you sometimes get what you pay for and you may end up rebuilding your rearend again before you know it. I am pretty sure that one of the vendors on this board can help you out for not to much money, go to the vendors section or the internet and look around. Goodluck.
