I have a bronco in my garage right now that seems to have broken spiders... I am wondering if the outers have to come out for the center section to be removed? After looking at it I beleive that I can remove the entire axle and the trin beam settup will come appart so I can get to the carrier for inspection...

Or does the entire hub, roter, shaft assembly have to be removed beore the center section is accessable??

Thanks for any help!!

No need to remove the whole beam. Just the hubs, shafts and then the carrier will come out

You have to remove the hubs/rotors/spindles/axleshafts, then the carrier housing can be unbolted from the beam (10 bolts on front, two behind the radius arm).

Note that the passengerside shaft will need to come apart at the slip-joint, the shaft that goes into the diff is held in place with a circlip inside the diff carrier.

or here's a better idea. cut the whole POS ttb setup out and replace with a real axle:flipoff2:

depends on what year bronco it is. from 80-82 it uses a bolt on bearing retainer.

Anyway, it's definitely easier to just leave the beams in place and pull the outers apart since you have to to get the drivers axle shaft out anyway.

I only had to remove the driver side outers on mine, the passenger side axleshaft can just be pulled out at the slip yoke without removing the passenger side outers.

what he said. :D

and get a friend to help you catch it. its akward when you have a shaft hanging out one side trying not to drop it on you...

it's not bad getting it out like that, but it's always saved me enough time putting it back together that I just disassemble both outers.

So people do it, I can just never seem to get the splines to slide past the seal in the slipshaft and then line up.

YMMV, of course.

Thanks for the advise...! Everything came appart unfortuantly after inspecting further we had to remove the passenger side anyways to replace the worn ball joints in the knuckle...

Any secrets to getting that knuckle off? I have taken off dozens of dana 44 knuckles but non that had the nut on top like this one does...

Once again any info is appriciated!

Remove the both nuts on the upper and lower ball joints, then use a pickle fork to separate the knuckles. They should drop right out after a few good hits with a heavy hammer. Then use a ball joint press to get the old ones out and press the new ones in.
