i just came across this pic, does anyone run a setup like this? What are the advantages/disadvantages? I'm perfectly happy with my 38.5 SXs, just curious...

I saw that same guy 3 weekends ago on the con asked why he did not use toyota axles and he said weight. I told him he had 8 frigen tires on his rig and he just smiled. Its was cause he can make all that stuff and has a business that sells it all.

that's the gayest thing i have ever seen... Saw a pic of it from EJS in some rag. I think you would be wayyy better off just running 35x15.5 SX's if you want small, wide tires. WTF? That just makes no sense. I bet the steering sucks unless it's hydro, and if it is, what about the strength of those zuk knuckles?? Too many crappy parts on that thing IMO.

Youre just jealous elf! :flipoff2:

hehe, Just kiddin

I dont know, seems ok, again though, why not just stick to 4 wider tires, and get just about the same contact patch for a lot less trouble?

Guess its for coolness factor...

That is Brent from Trail Tough, Talked to him about his design, and he said this is the best!

He said he will never change it!

I have wheeled with this guy before...in a different rig, but he fully gets it and isnt afraid of scratching his rig doing it!

Brent is a good guy with a lot of knowledge.....if he said it works well, it must work very well!

The only advantage I can see is if you need to keep one tire or the other on a sharp ridge to "hold the line" That big gap between the tires will stay on that sharp ridge like a train on its track, while a single wider tire could slip off, one direction or the other.

Another advantage:

You blow a tire out... you keep going until you find a comfortable spot to fix it.

Big disadvantage is getting a rock wedged between the 2 tires and having it cut both sidewalls.
This happens on the trucks I run to the quaries now, 10 ply ratings and they still get cut quite often.

Those axles are custom built by Brent. They run D44 297x ujoints.

From the people who were there said, it was making lines that other rigs could not even come close to making.

I talked to the guy when I saw him on the trail And all you sammi guys wanting 5.12 gearsets, he says he has them comin out his chulo. they are out of stock sidekick thirds. Don't know if they fit the sammi third. By the way he has that same rig in a mag this month I think 4wd and su. Saw it in one last night at Albertsons.

When you go off road what gets more bite- the closely spaced inner lugs or the massive outer lugs of a swamper (jagged stuff for example)?

That thing has twice as many large outer lugs. Look at both tires as one and see a type of tread pattern that is non existent today (like a bogger/TSL mix). It may seem pointless but my guess is that it can stick some wicked lines (on top of the trick steering it has)

I would imagine that when aired down, the sidwalls would rub and limit the deflection, not to mention the friction wearing out the sidewalls on each other.

Elf... your just concerned you are about to loose cool points because you "just" run rockwells now, and not 2 sets of tires. :flipoff2:

the sidewalls are so tough and its at such slow speeds that this isnt a real issue...

but IMO even if it works awesome i think its looks pretty :rainbow:. i sure as hell wont be running 8 tires anytime soon.

all i know is he drove up the watefall at the end of upper helldorado where everybody winches.........not many folks can say that.....ever!! his axles use sidekick rear chunks with d-44 knuckles and hydro steering all around. not many people can max out a 30deg ramp back and front!!! that thing is built to the hilt no matter what anyone says!!

here are some links...

Hey Daniel, did ya take that pic or find it on the web? Friend of mine is a civilian contractor who works in the motor pool at Ft. Leonardwood in Mo, and drives a hummer with mattrax like that around to fairs and stuff on the back of a hemmit as sort of an army promotional deal. Just wondered if it was the same one. Not that I think there are that many hummv's with mattrax's on em runnin around.

a minitruck tried that down here, but 12 tyres

how does it go?
gay!!

twice as many beads to pop, twice as nmany nice shiny alloys to bang up, twice as many sidewalls to rip up, twice as much money and if hes full worried about weight, dont be running 8 super swampers

and that diff centre doesnt look to have much clearance if its from a sammi...... especially runnign 34s, you should be able to play volleyball under it looks to big to be from a sammi

how do they all hold on? this guy full redneck chained his on and stuff, full texas style :rasta: :barf: :nuke: just bolted one tyre on and chained the rest to that :barf:

Rudezuk
06-25-2002, 04:47 PM
The center section is actually from a sidekick....not a zuk....quite a bit bigger..

BJ On Roids

so being bigger, hes sacrificed ground clearance and weight and the D44 outers would be heavy

so, basically he would be well over the weight of mini truck axles

:smokin:

i still dont get it

Naww, i still think it's gay. I don't care what any of the "big dogs" say... If Lance, or Shannon Cambpell, or whoever decided to convert their rig to dually F&R, then i would call them gay too. Dually is :rainbow: !!

Brents rig is way cool, he is based out of medford oregon and his company is called trail tough, the reason he doesnt use toyota shit is because, he is very brand loyal and i mean very. and the reason he told me for the tires is the tread comforms to the terrain alot better than having one tire that wide, my hat goes off to that guy before this suzuki thing he used to repair copy machines, if any of you are ever in medfore check out his shop, he is a way cool guy and really knows his stuff

Ben

if he was "very" brand loyal then he would not be using d44 outers on his axles. in my opinion just go find a set of waggy dana44's and throw under a zuk and call it a day. wider is better and they can take anything a sami motor can throw at them. like i said just my op.

as for the rig other than the dual wheels and the "brand loyal" axles, i think it is pretty sweet.

I'm wondering if he'd really stick that much better as-is than if he just had 4 of those 34's, but at the same overall width he has now? Has he tried it with just the outside 4?
