: FJ-40 rear fender cutting
m016324 06-23-2002, 12:19 PM I finally bought my old land cruiser from my dad and it has been sitting by the sea for about 6 yrs and is pretty rusted out now. I am planning on making this an exclusively off-road vehicle and I was curious if someone could post some pictures of cutting their rear fenders. I did a search and really didn't come up with any pictures. I am curious if it will be easiest to cut all the way to the bottom of the tub around the back because the rear quarters are a mess, but I don't know if this will look good and I really don't need to cut out the rear quarters for clearance but I also don't want to lose the look of the FJ-40. Any pics would be much appreciated

Polarweasel 06-23-2002, 04:55 PM I just took the Sawzall and chopped as much as I could all the way around the wheelwell, leaving almost enough to bend it over with pliers and a small sledge hammer. It looks pretty ghetto, but it did the trick. Just try to cut in a more-or-less smooth line, and it'll look OK. I left the rear alone, but I'll fix that when I replace the quarter panels and fenders in a couple of weeks. :D
I thought there were a couple pics on my web site of the trim job, but I guess not. I'm sure you get the idea, though. PM me if you want a couple pics, and I'll go outside and shoot them.
Mine are kind of ugly !!..here you go!
Polarweasel 06-23-2002, 06:30 PM Hey AZFJ, tell me about those half-doors I can see on your rig! Make 'em yourself? Got any better pics of them?

Ah. Oh, well. I want to make metal ones someday... I figure I might as well make something solid and more comfy to lean an arm on than my current Bestop soft doors. Thanks, though!
m016324 06-23-2002, 10:14 PM has anyone cut them all the way around the back? Basically take the top of the fender and cut all the way around to the tailgate. I am wondering if it will lose some of the cruiser look if I do this and want to see some pictures before I start at it with the sawzall and torch. Thanks

Why would you want to cut out the rear of the tub? The only reason I can see to do that would be if you moved your rear axle way back and the tires hit the tub......or the other reason would be because you just want to. :D
I think it takes away from the Cruiser look some when you cut out the rear tub around the corners.
cruiserbrett 06-25-2002, 08:15 AM I met a guy in Vista CA that had done the trim and tapered it down to the taillight area. Looks much lika rock buggy, less like a cruiser...
BTW is the "m016324" an alpha code???
m016324 06-25-2002, 10:27 AM well the rear quarters are pretty much rusted out completely and I've have to replace them and since I have no money what so ever right now I was just thinking of hacking them off. Maybe to be replaced at a later date but I was worried about losing the cruiser look. Which is seems is what is going to happen if I cut the fenders that much. Yes that's an alpha code always use it for everything just easy to remember after being pounded in your head for four + years. Just debating what to do with these fenders. Oh well I'll figure out out soon enough. Anyone have pictures of the trucks with the cut rear tubs?

cruiserbrett 06-25-2002, 11:06 AM I will never forget my alpha code..."m972178" Been beat into my head for four years too...Ughh.
I have pics of a couple of different FJ40s that are cut all the way back. Can't post pics here but if you want, I could e-mail you them offline. Let me know. It does take away from "the Cruiser look" That doesn't always have too be a bad thing. While I love the front end styling of 40's, I've always preferred round taillights(on the body), center mounted spares, and have a fetish for tube work and minimal body. If this truck is a total basket case, and your objective is a trail rig, remove the whole bed, and build some frame work out of tubing. Then just cut some side panels to your liking and mount them on the sides.:smokin:
BJ On Roids 06-25-2002, 10:33 PM hey DM, send me the pics, ill put the good ones up
whats an "alpha code"??
cruiserbrett 06-25-2002, 11:25 PM whats an "alpha code"??
Its a "number" you are given at the very beginning of your four years of schooling at the Naval Academy(or other service academies???) Most everything that happens there is tracked by your alpha code and you will never forget it, four years of repeatedly filling it out on paperwork, clothes, etc and it's pretty etched in your head...
m016324 06-26-2002, 12:13 AM yeah definately send me those pics bjt6179@aol.com
I'll post them when I get them.

Sorry, I don't have any shots of the rear of that one. I'm looking to see if I have some better shots of the rear of another rig cut that way.
"just put lights on teh rear of the tub, and hack the outers off the bumper bar"-yeah, what he said...You can buy the universal round tail lights at the auto parts store dirt cheap and they look good.
